Publisher's Summary

Set in early 1950s rural South Carolina, One Good Mama Bone chronicles Sarah Creamer's quest to find her "mama bone", after she is left to care for a boy who is not her own but instead is the product of an affair between her husband and her best friend and neighbor, a woman she calls "sister". When her husband drinks himself to death, Sarah, a dirt-poor homemaker with no family to rely on and the note on the farm long past due, must find a way for her and young Emerson Bridge to survive. But the more daunting obstacle is Sarah's fear that her mother's words, seared in her memory since she first heard them at the age of six, were a prophecy, "You ain't got you one good mama bone in you, girl."

When Sarah reads in the local newspaper that a boy won $680 with his Grand Champion steer at the recent 1951 Fat Cattle Show and Sale, she sees this as their financial salvation and finds a way to get Emerson Bridge a steer from a local farmer to compete in the 1952 show. But the young calf is unsettled at Sarah's farm, crying out in distress and growing louder as the night wears on. Some four miles away, the steer's mother hears his cries and breaks out of a barbed-wire fence to go in search of him. The next morning Sarah finds the young steer quiet, content, and nursing a large cow. Inspired by the mother cow's act of love, Sarah names her Mama Red. And so Sarah's education in motherhood begins with Mama Red as her teacher.

But Luther Dobbins, the man who sold Sarah the steer, has his sights set on winning too, and, like Sarah, he is desperate, but not for money. Dobbins is desperate for glory, wanting to regain his lost grand-champion dynasty, and he will stop at nothing to win. Emboldened by her lessons from Mama Red and her budding mama bone, Sarah is committed to victory even after she learns the winning steer's ultimate fate. Will she stop at nothing, even if it means betraying her teacher?

    Story
"Author narrator exceptional in her accents!"
What made the experience of listening to One Good Mama Bone the most enjoyable?

    The storyline and the accents

Who was your favorite character and why?

Sarah, because she became a great mother despite her own mother's deficiencies and lack of love

What about Bren McClain’s performance did you like?

Her accents. I could relate, for instance to the word "flice water" (flyswatter), which is the way I said it growing up. Her inflections and tonal variations also intrigued me.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Several, including the night Mama Red broke away and found her calf at the Craemer place. Also, when Emerson Bridge made the decision to proceed with the Grand Champion competition

    Any additional comments?

One of my all-time favorite books to date

    Story
    "Beyond Moving"
What did you love best about One Good Mama Bone?

After having read the book I was incredibly excited to hear the audio! I honestly didn't want it to end! It is brilliant, magical and so moving on every level possible! We can all find a character or characters we can relate to! I could visualize the future movie, and hope some day that will be another medium we can watch to experience this beautiful story!

What other book might you compare One Good Mama Bone to and why?

This book reminds me so much of the depth, life lessons and love that emanated from "To Killing a Mockingbird." I felt every moment of it, and could relate all of these years later to many life lessons and messages I had received and experienced in my own childhood and life!

What does Bren McClain bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Bren's roots are this story...her voice, life and experiences were poured into every character and you can truly feel it. I love that she recorded it in her own voices, it makes it even more magical than the written word itself!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Oh so many! But when Sarah was helping Mama Red Birth her new baby...in the Audio that was beyond powerful! I honestly wept, listening to it!

    Any additional comments?

I have been so moved and touched by this story...I could read it, and listen to the audio over and over again! It was brilliant, moving and magical!

    "Simply Fabulous!"

This audio book was one of the best I've heard. Bren McClain did a remarkable job reading her debut novel. As good a job as any professional narrator. And the story is simply Fabulous. If you liked, To Kill A Mockingbird, then this book is right up.your alley.
