#1 INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER • Dexter and Emma must face the nature of love and even life itself in this page-turning story filled with "heart-melting romance" (Elle). One of the most "emotionally riveting love stories you’ll ever encounter" (People).

It’s 1988 and Dexter Mayhew and Emma Morley have only just met. But after only one day together, they cannot stop thinking about one another. Over twenty years, snapshots of that relationship are revealed on the same day—July 15th—of each year. Dex and Em face squabbles and fights, hopes and missed opportunities, laughter and tears. And as the true meaning of this one crucial day is revealed, they must come to grips with the nature of love and life itself.

Any additional comments?

Try the abridged version. The story seems to go on and on with nothing significant happening.

Bittersweet Romance

Emma, the female protagonist embodies the attributes men want (beautiful but doesn't know it/or act like it), witty, not terribly prudish, and down-to-earth. In contrast, her two love interests are unappealing (one is a spoiled rich boy trapped in a man's body while the other is an aspiring comedian who isn't funny at all). I found myself only mildly invested in the story. I didn't care who Emma ended up with because I felt she could do better than either option. I did appreciate the lyrical quality of the writing and the realistic dialogue. The narrator was able to capture the essence of each character and had a pleasant melodious voice.

Surprise discovery, Very involving.

Not prone to love stories, I only downloaded this book because it was part of a heavily discounted promotion and it had received generally very good reviews. I brought it out of hibernation while waiting to board a trans-atlantic flight recently and immediately got hooked. The structure is cleverly inventive, the writing is polished and full of insight and nuance and is often laugh-out-loud comedic.

But it's the delivery by the highly talented Ms. Bentinck that is nothing short of sensational. Her seamless segues into new accents and voices, and her gender flips are an absolute marvel. What a performance!

Oh sure there are times when you get so irritated with some of the characters' behavior, especially the male of the species, that you're tempted - albeit briefly - to shut down the enterprise. And yes, the twenty-year affair seems a bit of a stretch. But Nicholls is clever enough, and Bentinck engaging enough to keep you hanging in there. And you're pleased you did.

Bottom line, I finished the book in three days, which is highly unusual for me. And, more importantly, the memories still linger on... Bravo!

What does Anna Bentinck bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I love the inflection in her voice when she was speaking as some of the female characters.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Timeless Love

I would recommend this to all my romance novel friends. This a very good book to spend a lazy afternoon listening to.

What other book might you compare One Day to and why?

Muddling Through

Story about two souls, one smart, witty yet lack of confidence, one charming yet drowned in alcoholism; slowly develop in a genuine, believable story about friendship, partnership and love. Fumbling and muddling through, small moment and action could change the whole course of your life, and the one you truly love.

Funny, Heart-wrenching, Honest

One of my favorite books. Great writing, believable plot. Beautiful story, made me cry in the end. Not rom-com-y, which I hate in books.

Great listen!

It's rare that I listen to audiobooks more than once, but this one warranted a second listen. I enjoy the intense study of the evolution of a relationship, so this was right up my alley.
Can't wait for the movie!

Wholesome & Touching

Very beautiful and well written novel, I have ever read. Watched the Netflix show as well prior to reading. Will revisit ‘One Day’ and read it again, until then I’m passing this book along to friends and family, to feel the emotions I felt while reading. I can’t get enough of it. ♥️

Brilliantly written; superb narrator

Facinating way to lay out a story.

I found the lead characters profoundly difficult to like; yet also compelling. Couldn't put the story down.

Alert: full blown alcoholism on display.
