Publisher's Summary

It's 1988 and Dexter Mayhew and Emma Morley have only just met. They both know that the next day, after college graduation, they must go their separate ways. But after only one day together, they cannot stop thinking about one another. As the years go by, Dex and Em begin to lead separate lives—lives very different from the people they once dreamed they'd become. And yet, unable to let go of that special something that grabbed onto them that first night, an extraordinary relationship develops between the two.

Over 20 years, snapshots of that relationship are revealed on the same day—July 15th—of each year. Dex and Em face squabbles and fights, hopes and missed opportunities, laughter and tears. And as the true meaning of this one crucial day is revealed, they must come to grips with the nature of love and life itself.

What a disappointment

I usually enjoy books that span a lifetime, or at least a long time, but this was the exception. Instead of the story becoming rich with history as the book went one, it just became painful. I wanted to bonk both of the main characters over the head during most of the book, but held on thinking surely they would mature. Unfortunately they didn't.

Despite the story falling short, some of the writing was quite well done and humorous. The narration was very good and is what saved the book from being put out to pasture before its completion.

Laughed out loud... I never do that

This is one of the best books I've read in a long, long time. I already miss the characters. Nicholls does an incredible job of capturing both the female and mail perspectives.

I couldn't get through it.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Maybe the 30 somethings can relate. I kept trying to get into book this but these two characters were so self absorbed and clueless it was just tiresome.

What didn’t you like about Anna Bentinck’s performance?

The narrator was fine.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

No.

Loved the first 80%.

I think it is worth the download. The characters really grow on you since you are covering a 20 year friendship. I really enjoyed the friendship: the sexual tension, the growth and changes and how at times they were very close then grew apart. I wasn't keen on the ending. It was disappointing and just went on and on...I won't add a spoiler here. Is it worth the download? I think so. Until the end, I couldn't stop listening to it. The narrator is very good and Em and Dex really grew on me, especially Em.

loved this book

What a surprisingly great book! This will be in my list of favorites! With a unique story-line and unexpected turns, you have never read anything like it, I can assure you. At first, I wasn't sure how the jumping feel of the book would feel more than one or two jumps in (taking one day a year for many years), being afraid it would feel a bit like Ground Hog's Day. Pleasantly, though, it is nothing like that, and continues to be fresh throughout. Fun, shallow, deep, heartwarming...all in one.

unexpected surprise book

I purchased this audible book based on the reviews. In the beginning I was wondering why but I continued to listen. It was the usual boy meets girl situation. But about 2/3rds the way through the audible it really got good and took some unexpected twists and turns. It was very well written book and an entertaining reading of the book. The last 1/3rd of the book more than makes up for the beginning. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a different author.

Boring story line

This book could not keep my attention. The English accent of the narrator was difficult to understand. I did not finish the book as it was boring and uninteresting.

Meh - not so good

This is the story of what happens when two whiners don't get together. She's a perfectionist. He's a drunk. I had to force myself to listen to it and I'm still not through it. And all I can hear is Anne Hathaway's voice in my head, and I like Anne Hathaway.
