Publisher's Summary

The great Norse myths are woven into the fabric of our storytelling - from Tolkien, Alan Garner and Rosemary Sutcliff to Game of Thrones and Marvel Comics. They are also an inspiration for Neil Gaiman's own award-bedecked, best-selling fiction. Now he reaches back through time to the original source stories in a thrilling and vivid rendition of the great Norse tales. Gaiman's gods are thoroughly alive - irascible, visceral, playful and passionate - and the tales carry us from the beginning of everything to Ragnarök and the twilight of the gods. Galvanised by Gaiman's prose, Thor, Loki, Odin and Freya are irresistible forces for modern listeners, and the crackling, brilliant writing demands to be heard around an open fire on a freezing, starlit night.

Simply superb

I loved it. Mythology is fascinating enough, but is at another level thanks to Gaiman's obvious love for it.

Norse Mythology overview at its best

Neil Gaiman managed a near impossible task in creating a view of Norse Mythology that I could understand. Since I did not grow up in the UK or Ireland, it was very confusing, until he retold the stories is a way that seems to follow a chronological structure.
Teaching by story telling - the way it ought to be done all the time.
Thanks Neil.

The Gods, Frail, Failing and LIkeable

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

It is a great and friendly way to become acquainted with the impressive mythology of a people who once adventured far and wide.

What other book might you compare Norse Mythology to and why?

Homer's Odyssey

What about Neil Gaiman’s performance did you like?

The characters he puts on the stage, although bestowed with divine powers, have all the shortcomings of mere mortals. Their petty squabbles, foolish actions, deceptions and heroic feats makes you relate to them.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

The Gods; Survive against the Odds

captivating!

i love the way Gaiman tells the story in his own way that makes the mythology come to life and gives you breaks to think about the reasoning behind why/how these myths came about.

Blood and ice and lots of mead!

Great myths, so many so similar to other modern tales and yet so distinct and rowdy. Made me want to go back to Iceland!

Norseome

Neil, tells the stories of the Norse Gods with ease and in his own relaxed style that, in my opinion, bring the characters to life in a way that relates to now, its current..and I, for one absolutely loved it...I've read all the classic tomes on North Mythology, poetic Eddas, Sagas, quite heavy going for even the most dedicated seekers of the Nordic Deities ..!
I recommend pouring a large glass of mead, throwing a log on the fire, sitting back and be transported back to the world at it's very beginning with Ginnunganap, until its end with the coming of Ragnarok.
Skäl! :)

Great stories, incredible adaptation.

Of course Neil Gaiman is a great writer. But when he tells the story himself you can feel the personality of each character. I especially enjoyed the shift in Thor's tone from unintelligent and slightly playful to serious as the book progressed.

Great short stories. <br />

very much enjoyed listening to the short stories, great performance by Neil although in some places seemed a little childish and straight forward. I would recommend this book as a introduction to the mythology genre.

Amazing tales from the North

What did you like most about Norse Mythology?

I love the way that Neil Gaiman has updated the stories and made them accessible, whilst still being true to the originals.

What other book might you compare Norse Mythology to, and why?

Almost like a book of fairy tales, but for adults

Which character – as performed by Neil Gaiman – was your favourite?

Thor; I love the way he just wants to hit things with his hammer.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Watch out, the Gods are back...

Any additional comments?

I love anything by Neil Gaiman and this definitely does not disappoint.

a great collection of short stories

Read by Neil Gaimen (which I think helps give the listener more of an insight as to the mind of the author), they are fun yet interesting and hold up well against Neil's longer books. It is clear they are a compendium of ideas that perhaps were going to be larger things but as a collection of short stories there is a general theme running through them and I can keep going back and enjoying them over and over again.

Sibilated S sounds

If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

I love Neil Gaiman's books but I've discovered my ears are too sensitive for his siblated S sounds, I was cringing until I gave up a quarter of the book through. It could be just me...

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I will read it in print instead.

Simplistic and boring

I found myself zoning out and often bored by the stories despite their brevity and variation. It felt childish and uninspired. Didn't bother to finish. Neil Gaiman's performance was lacklustre and didn't help.

Excellent and entertaining introduction to Norse mythology. Covered the major points well. You really wonder how the gods tolerated Loki for so long.

A sublime retelling.

A fantastic retelling of Snorri's and the Poetic Edda. Gaiman has a voice like honey and breathes life into the mythology like the poets of old.

I will be revisiting these chapters again and again.
