Overall good story but offensive in places.

I received a free code for this book via audio boom. This story is written in a charming way that makes you feel as though you are one of the characters in the story. The pug’s charming antics added the perfect amount of comic relief the kept the story from becoming dark and gloomy. I will warn that the book becomes quite transphobic. While the story is written with Victorian attitudes, listeners who have more modern views may want to skip this one. Without spoiling too much of the plot, there is a character misgendered almost constantly and considered insane for being the modern definition of transgender.

Enjoyable

A charming Victorian ripper tale with a very likeable heroine in Miss Hewitt. You like her support system and you wonder how on earth her good friend Clark ever managed to get married to a greedy old harpy like his wife. The story flowed nicely and you definitely wanted Miss Hewitt to succeed in her quest and if she was lucky enough, get the happily ever after, she might not have been looking for in the first place. It had interesting characters as well as quirky ones and they were all good and the action wasn't bad either, So when you get a chance pick up a copy and enjoy.

Marvelous start to a brilliant new series

Reminiscent of another couple of female detectives, this Miss Hewitt and her group of cohorts, are determined to see justice done.
This marvelously concocted plot keeps the reader (or listener) on tenterhooks to ensure the safety of the lady in question.

Fast Paced!

In this investigation, Miss Hewitt is engaged to solve the mystery of who has killed two ladies from the Women's Emergency Corps. Has 'The Ripper' returned?
She gathers her friends and staff around her to quickly solve these crimes as she outwits the murderer.
It is a fast paced and nicely written story by Linda Stephenson and I listened to the audiobook version, entertained by Julia Eve with her interesting narration.
I requested and received a promotional copy of the audiobook and my voluntary and unbiased review is recorded above.

Lots of action packed into 2 hours!

There is a lot of action packed into Miss Hewitt Investigates the Return of the Ripper by Linda Stephenson. The title character is lady detective Miss Isabel Hewitt who appears to be independently wealthy in 1915 London despite her unmarried status. She is asked to investigate two murders of fellow members of the Women's Emergency Corps. Isabel butts head with the local investigating officer, who arrests the wrong person, and she methodically tracts down the killer in short order.

Although Return of the Ripper appears to be the first in the Miss Hewitt Investigates series, I felt like I came into the middle of the series. How are her investigation skills established enough to be hired to find a killer? Also, Miss Hewitts’s manservant Clarke returns from the war after being injured and their relationship appears to be a close one (he moves into her house). How did he become such a trusted employee? Finally, Clarke’s estranged wife visits Isabel to let him know he is back from the war. Who is she and why does this relationship seemed strained to say the least?

I listened to the Audible version of this story narrated by Julia Eve, which runs 2 1/4 hours long. Her narration was very enjoyable and she really bought the characters to life, using a variety of distinct voices. Despite the unanswered questions I have about the back story, I’m looking forward to listening to other books in the Miss Hewitt Investigates series.
