Man reads words without comprehension...

If Stephen Hawking narrated this story it would be only marginally less emotional, and only slightly more mechanical than that of John Bolens. I struggled through this story to find to my absolute horror that this "narrator" had butchered a worthwile classic. Vernes knowledge of the subject matter seems remarkable when it is considered that at the time this story was written how little much "fact" can be found in the novels of his popular contemporaries. A corker of a yarn as well so do get the book, but PLEASE, keep away from this recording!

So bad that a certain grandeur creeps in

This may be a wonderful book, but the reading was so awful I couldn't concentrate on the content and gave up after about an hour or two. The reader does all of the dialogue (and there is a lot of it) in an absurdly exaggerated Russian accent. At first it was funny, but it got old fast. Don't waste your money on this one.

Awfull Reading.

What would have made Michael Strogoff better?

Man it is so hard to follow the story line while trying to ignore the idiotic interprtation of Russian Accents attempted by this awful reader. It actually sounds like he is taking it as a joke and having a laugh at my expense. The alternative, him actually thinking he is nailing the voice performance, is even scarier.

What didn’t you like about John Bolen’s performance?

NOTHING.

What character would you cut from Michael Strogoff?

John Bolen

Any additional comments?

Did any one stop once while this guy was recording and ask themselves, do we really want to ruin such an amazing novel???

Fantastic novel with terrible narration

I've always loved Jules Verne, but hadn't heard of this book. It is historical fiction set from Russia west to Siberia published in 1876. Not all of what happens is based in fact, but the power of the story makes much of it feel as if it could have happened just like that.

Michael Strogoff is a courier of the Czar and must get a letter to Irkutsk because telegraph lines have been cut. Strogoff meets several characters such as a teenage girl, Nadia, two foreign reporters, some people that help along the way, and then the traitor Igan Ogareff. He is a key player that you'll want to keep track of while you read or listen to this. The journey isn't easy and things go very badly.

It isn't science fiction, but there are some parts of the plot that depend on Verne's understanding of science. I love how Verne always mixes facts of and impressions about places. The action takes place from summer into fall, but it is just coincidence that I listened to it in October.

The narration was bizarre. It was overacted with exaggerated and unnecessary accents. I give the story 4 stars, but wonder if it would have been 5 stars if I had heard someone better narrate it. It is a freebie, included in Audible plus catalog. There are a couple of other narrations that aren't very expensive, but even they didn't seem fabulous when I sampled them. I think a great narrator ought to take on this book and give us a reading that gives it better treatment and fewer overdone accents.

Bad Reading

It was very difficult to follow along with this reading. The fake accents made it an awful rendition. I might enjoy it if someone else read it

Great Story

Enjoying everything except the narrator's performance. His Russian is horrible, and his pronounciation of "Ekaterinburg" (Catherine's City) is giving me a headache.

A cool book

A great author and a cool story. I recommend this book because there surely is a great thread that the author has woven through his stories.

Great story, great reader!

This was a exciting and engaging story with plot twists same an unexpected ending! The reader also did a great job, creating sound profiles for each character. He did his job so we'll that I found myself lost in the story, which is perfect!
