Publisher's summary

Devastating secrets tear two families apart in this acclaimed novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Sherryl Woods

For ten years Emily Dobbs and Marcie Carter have been the closest of friends. They've raised their kids together, shared joy and heartache, exchanged neighborhood gossip over tea. But when Marcie's son, now a college freshman sports star, is arrested for date rape, the bond between the families could be shattered forever.

As the Carters try to deal with the unthinkable, Emily discovers her daughter has been hiding a terrible secret...a secret that threatens the futures of both families. Recently divorced, Emily struggles to keep it all together - to support her terrified daughter, to maintain her friendship with Evan's mother and to have faith in the detective who could change all of their lives.

When things seem darkest, both she and Marcie discover that sometimes the first step toward a better future is mending fences with the past.

A Must

This book addresses the topic of rape in a timely, straight forward and respectful way. It is a "must" read or listen to open a frank and open discussion. Totally tasteful presentation of a delicate topic.

Excellent Book

While the synopsis gives away a good portion of the book, it's still excellent as friendships, families and new relationships are tested in ways none of them would have imagined. The narrator does a great job through the book, allowing the story to tell itself and not the other way around

Well written story about rape

Would you listen to Mending Fences again? Why?

No... as a rape survivor the story was too focused on the survivors life and outlook. Not that it is a bad thing but it isn't a comfortable thing as a survivor.

What did you like best about this story?

I loved the building of the characters. Sherryl Woods is known for building characters and worlds that as a reader you really come to care about. This one is no different. It is a very well written beautiful story - just hits too close to home as a rape survivor.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. Most of her books I pretty much do listen to all in one sitting. But this is a good book that makes you uncomfortable if you've been there.

Any additional comments?

This is a beautiful story about families growing together and ending up torn apart by rape. Would I recommend reading it? Absolutely! However even if you think you're ready if you've been raped having it brought to life can be dangerous.

Intense content

The narrator was not my favorite as the voice was a little whiny and nasally . The story hit home.

GOOD STORY!

I enjoyed this story and all the characters. I'm a fan of Sherryl Woods. I don't exactly know how to express my feelings about the context of the story. It's a problem I wouldn't want to deal with on either side. Although the story is good, it's not GREAT but still worth the credit! Thus the 4 star rating. However, you should be your own judge.

great story

I loved the story itself, full of life and real feeling people. All of the emotions were believable as were the characters themselves.

I did have a problem with the narrator. She wasn't absolutely horrible at her job, she just has major problems with emotion in her voice. For screams, she whispered. For a serious woman, she sounded whimpering and scared. Overall she just can't get it right.

Not sure what I'm missing...

I'm surprised at my disappointment in this book, as I was sold on this new author by multiple 4+ star audio books. I'm not the person who has to finish a book once I start, so I did not finish this, but I did listen to quite a bit before deciding to return it.

My main issues were the narrator and authenticity of character behavior. While the narrator definitely wasn't the worse I've ever heard, and this fact alone didn't completely turn me off from the book, I was annoyed by the voice change when reading dialogue by the male characters. It was very chees
