Audible Editor Reviews

After the death of her mother, a young girl from a rural fishing village is sold to a Geisha House in the Gion District of Kyoto. Her fate continually twists, along with Japan's, before, during and after World War II.

This listen captures with great detail the lush glamour of a geisha's world, as well as the brutal realities of indentured servitude. The experience is superior to that of the movie, because each moment is mined for maximum insight. Protocols and relationships, even food and finances, are also meticulously described. The result is total immersion in this fascinating culture.

The narration may seem reserved, but that is appropriate given the book's setting. The sexual content is also very discreet and appropriate. Watching the movie is only getting your feet wet; get the full experience through this listen, a bewitching strong step into not just another time, but another world.

Publisher's Summary

Nitta Sayuri tells us in a voice at once haunting and startlingly immediate of her life as a geisha. Her story begins in a poor fishing village in 1929, when, as a nine-year-old girl with unusual blue-gray eyes, she is taken from her home and sold into slavery to a renowned geisha house. We witness her transformation as we enter a world where appearances are paramount; where a girl's virginity is auctioned to the highest bidder; where women are trained to beguile the most powerful men; and where love is scorned as illusion.

It is a unique and triumphant work of fiction - at once romantic, erotic, suspenseful - and completely unforgettable.

    "A Geisha's world"

I confess I was very reluctant to delve into the world of the Geisha, I've just never been all that fascinated with that particular culture. I had a long road trip so I took a chance. Wow, what a magnificent story! It is so well researched and the author placed himself into the lead characters pov so well that I simply couldn't believe it wasn't an actual memoir. Maybe on some level it is, every Geisha probably had a very sad story.
Just don't watch the movie after you've experience the whole story. The movie is a dreadful, hollowed out imitation of all the author worked so hard to bring to life.

    "A wonderful Listen"

I was enchanted with this book, which had a very spiritually uplifting effect on me. I found the story of a young girl sold into slavery who wins through in the end despite the repression of women, very inspiring. I recommend this to all kindred spirits, both male and female. I have recently discovered Zen and wonder if the two are linked.

    "Nothing could compare"

Absolutely the best book I have ever read/listened to. Once it starts you are hooked into it, and will never want to put it down. The movie is nothing whatsoever compared to the book ... anyone who enjoys reading MUST read this.

"I didn't want it to end!"

I cannot recommend enough, the audiobook, Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden. From the very first passage, the listener is hooked. The writing is so descriptive that you can almost smell the incense and feel the silk of the kimonos. The listener is transported to a world we might not be able to imagine and appalled at times at the living conditions Sayuri is expected to endure.

The story is funny and sad and touching and the reader imparts subtle yet distiguishable voices for each character which brings them to life.

I listened to the audiobook each day on my lunch break and looked forward to it every time. I truly didn't want the story to end.

    "Great Listen"

This was my first audio book, so it took some time getting used to being read to. All in all, this is a great story. Loved it!

    "True Memoirs"

The writing was so good; I would have thought it was a non fiction book. This story is so much better than the movie was able to convey.
