Publisher's Summary

Juliet Beckett believes in destiny. When she moves into Greywethers, a beautiful 16th-century farmhouse, she suspects that more than coincidence has brought her there.

The locals are warm and welcoming, especially the eligible squire of Crofton Hall. Yet beneath the ordinaries, Julia senses a haunting sadness about her new home. Then she learns of Mariana, a beautiful young woman who lived there 300 years ago. It seems history has been waiting for Julia....

I was hooked when I heard the Narrator's voice!

Although purchasing the Book originally for my Wife, I decided to have a break from my usual Seafaring & Crime Audiobooks.
Well! What a surprise this one turned out to be!
Carolyn Bonnyman's intimate reading style made me feel that she was sitting opposite me over a cup of coffee and telling me this tale in an almost whispered voice!
Her ability to enhance the somewhat eerie setting just with her voice was quite captivating.
Although I would not normally have selected such a Book for myself, I am so glad I did!

Didn't see that coming!

When I first started listening to this book I struggled with the constant changes in time, but as the book progressed and I relaxed into the story I revelled in all the twists and turns. Mariana is a book that you can't multi-task with - it demands full concentration - a lapse of a few minutes will leave you wondering just what happened and how you missed it. It is a book that needs to be read a couple of times to fully understand and appreciate its underlying intricacies. The narration of the book is excellent and flows easily around each character.

What about Jeff

I don't know what to think overall. At the end I was a little sad and confused. I feel a very important person in the story was left unexplained. However overall the book accomplished what I'm looking for whenever I read ... to totally take me to a different place for a while and left missing the characters as if I know them when the book is done.
As for the reader I don't feel she gave enough inflection in her voice to totally convince me of who the characters were.

Not your typical time travel

If you could sum up Mariana in three words, what would they be?

creative, romantic, satisying

What does Carolyn Bonnyman bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Carolyn Bonnyman's voice is magical. So gentle and intimate, with great accents. She doesn't over-do character voice changes - makes it all so seemless.

By far my favorite romance writer

I am never disappointed by Susanna Kearsley. Her writing is superb! There is always some mystery woven into the romance. With an ending to make any Jane Austin Lover swoon.

Beautiful tale

I loved this book and Thea narrator. I will admit that at first, I struggled with the narrator. I stop listening and went to another book. But because I have recently become a fan of Susanna Kearsley, I thought I would give it another try and I am so happy that I did.

This story was a beautifully written, with well developed characters and a very good plot. You must pay attention as nearly every sentence is important to the story. It is a complex tale. After my first listen, I listened again the next day.

This story makes you wonder, it pulls at your heart. Carolyn Bonnyman actually turns out to be a very good choice to tell us this story. She does not narrated, she actually tells us a remarkable tale.

Now, I need to go buy another Kearsley novel. Mariana left me totally fulfilled, but wanting yet mor Kearsley.

A Susanna Kearsley masterpiece

Where does Mariana rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Although I consider SK the finest author of this decade, the narration did not compliment this fantastic story.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Mariana?

The entire book

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

The narrator seemed to mumble at times. I know she was trying to sound etheral but I would rather be able to understand the words. She does not have the voice or range to play the various characters, esp male.

If you could rename Mariana, what would you call it?

Mariana

Wonderful escape

I particularly enjoyed this book becauseit was narrated beautifully and was a gentle way to relax to a story that took me back in time. I often don't get teary in books but it was difficult not to feel compassion for the characters in this book

Interesting time-slip tale

Julia Becket moves to the country from London, and finds her perfect home in the shape of Greywethers a 17th century cottage.

Right from the start we get the sense that the house chose Julia rather than the other way round, and soon Julia realizes all is not quite as it seems. She starts having strange experiences seemingly transported back to the past and into the life of a woman called Mariana.

I quite enjoyed this story, and liked the characters and gentle love story. However I only gave it three stars, This is primarily because of the narrator, Carolyn Bonnyman. I found her voice too monotone, and lacking emotion, especially when there was a lot of dialogue. When different characters were speaking there wasn't enough difference made between them and this could be a bit confusing, as in a pub scene when there were four people all having a conversation together.

I still enjoyed it though and found the story entertaining, with enough mystery about it to keep me interested.

Pure escapism ...

Beautifully written story, that reels you in and you don't want to stop until you reach the end. Narrated wonderfully with the gentle change in accents and tones. A must read, weaving from past to present, can't wait for another of Ms Kearsley's stories.

Does not download chapters properly

Inevitably I fall asleep listening to this although I do love the story and the narrator voice. However, when I return to it, I cannot go back to the correct chapter as it does not download correctly i.e., Chapter 2 actually narrates as Chapter 5 so how do I hear Chapter 3 or 4 etc. Really disappointed

Pleasant enough

Mariana is a long, slow slog. I did finish the book but I never really got involved with the character or her adventures, I wanted too, but it never happened, and the story didn't hold my attention easily. This is my second Kearsley novel, I listened to Season of Storms first and enjoyed it immensely, Mariana doesn't compare with it at all. The narration is nice but at times I struggled to know which character was speaking. I recommend it for a light, relaxing read if that's what you're looking for but I don't think you can expect to be entranced by this one.
