September 1918: the First World War is nearly over, and people are in denial about a virulent form of influenza that is sweeping the world. Eve waits at home in England while her husband, Harvey, a scientist, works in Camp Devens in the USA, where hundreds of young soldiers have fallen sick with the disease. Along with James Ferber, an army pathologist, the two men struggle to save lives to the point of self-sacrifice.
Back in England, Kate Beatty and her sister are lucky to know Eve. She becomes a saving grace when their family is struck down. No one is safe, and thousands of lives are changed forever by the tragic epidemic.
