Life's Long... But Short!

A Great Page Turner. I found this novel to be very entertaining. If you like "tall tales" about the power of "seers, soothsayers or clairvoyants" dead or alive, then you will enjoy this book. Of course, I had to suspend my powers of disbelief to the maximum, but I enjoy stories that entertain and I must say that this story was entertaining. It is set in the South and as most of us know, southern Black folks have a way of speaking that may be annoying to some because they use a lot of "sayings" and "cliches" and this book uses cliches up the yang-yang!. Nevertheless, this was a page turner for me. The story is about how dead great-great grandmother is able to help and guide her grandchild and her great-great grandchildren through the use of her powers as a "seer." The back stories are good too... There are about two or three love stories with only one or two serious but appropriate love scenes. The story is written from three different generations points of view. The author did a great job of developing each generation's story in a way that it was easy to follow.

The narrator did a good job varying the voices of characters. He was able to give believable enough tones to each character and he didn't need use a southern accent because the influence of the southern words and sayings were enough.

Excellent story!!

Spiritual, inspirational, funny characters and voices!!! I was glued to figure out how it would end!!! It did not disappoint but I wish I could find out what happened with the parents! I also appreciated the historical mysticism!

Good but all over the place

This book was so funny; had several laugh out loud moments. I was a bit lost on a couple of scenarios; it seemed the book contradicted itself or I lost track of what was going on. It took too long to return to drama filled storyline with Madeline; I thought a whole day had gone by, but hadn’t when the focus was back on Madeline; the timing seemed off. The narrator did a good job bringing characters to life; the scenarios with Slim were too funny. I plan to add this to favorites because of the drama and laughs.

Loving the Past and Present

Looking for Trouble by Trice Hickman

Amazon Headline: Loving the Past and the Present

I’ve been keeping up with this author since 2011 I started my journey with Unexpected Interruptions and kept it going from there. These characters have truly become special to me. This is a large clan and sometimes it’s a little difficult to keep it straight. Don’t believe that it has anything to do with the author’s writing because it doesn’t. I still have to ask my sister “how is he/she related to us” (smile)

I was blessed a few years ago to be part of a community called A Chapter a Month. While in this community this is where I got to know so much about the lives of the Small family, at the helm is Grandma Allene (Isaiah’ mother).
The next generation was started by Isaiah and his wife Henrietta Small who gave birth to John, Billy and Phyllis. John went on to give birth to Victoria Small who gave birth to a gifted child named Alexandria.

Looking for Trouble fuses the past with the right here and now. Grandma Allene and Alexandria share the same gift and it is through this connection that Grandma Allene crosses time to speak to Alexandria, and to teach her about her gift. Trouble is brewing in the Small family and its going to take the natural and unnatural to stop it from boiling over into their lives.

As I got more familiar with Grandma Allene it took me to Scripture the bible talks about gifts of the Spirit and manifestations, God makes believers aware of needs that He wants to meet through them, this is what Grandma Allene taught.
Hickman does an excellent job of keeping the lines clear while managing dual narration from Alexandria’s point of view in the here and now and John’s from the past.

Outstanding story I can’t wait to read Troublemaker..
A complimentary copy of this book was provided by the author for my honest and thoughtful review.

Too much

This book was all over the place. I was bored but I had to finish because I used a credit. The narrator did a great job but the stories were boring except Madeline’s. Just too many stories with very little importance.
