Publisher's summary

"A tour de force...London tracks the history of the English capital from the days of the Celts until the present time.... Breathtaking." - The Orlando Sentinel

Here is Edward Rutherfurd's classic novel of London, a glorious pageant spanning 2,000 years. He brings this vibrant city's long and noble history alive through the ever-shifting fortunes, fates, and intrigues of half-a-dozen families, from the age of Julius Caesar to the 20th century. Generation after generation, these families embody the passion, struggle, wealth, and verve of the greatest city in the world.

Do NOT buy on Audible

I've no doubt the story is amazing, as most of Rutherfurd's works are. However the narrator, Andrew Wincott is horrible, in my opinion. He begins each sentence clearly and then fades very quickly in the middle of each sentence into almost a whisper of a voice. Very, VERY annoying to try to listen to on Audible!

Absolutely Fabulous!

Any listener of English history novels should not miss this one. All of Rutherfurd's books are wonderful. "Serum", "The Forest", "London" are all worth the time and the credit. The book follows generations of families from the beginning of London to the 20th century. Rutherfurd captures English history accurately through the lives of his characters. High Praise !

Great Historical Novel ! Learn and be entertained

What a bargain - over 49 hours of history with a cast of entertaining characters. While most characters were fictionalized, their lives, conduct, emotions, and motives were consistent with my over 60 years experience. How Mr. Rutherford ties the characters together over the span of almost 2,000 years - he is a craftsman. The story very complex, yet could be followed and always fascinating. I like entertaining learning and the book LONDON, educates in the history of London in a very entertaining way. Narrator Mr. Wincott - excellent.

So glad the author has other books that I can enjoy.

This story was my long time companion

What a wonderful story. I have been reading his books since Sarum came out and this is one of my favorites. The narrator is very good with the variety of dialects, though his female voices just sound breathy.

Not Sarum !

Good stuff, but can’t compare to Sarum, which was one of my favorite reads. Being a confirmed Anglophile I was anxious to focus on London. Sarum is so wide in scope, I thought London would be just my cup of tea. Similar but no where nearly as good.

Overall, good.

I love the narrator's deep voice, but the way he performs female voices really grates on my nerves.

Engaging Creative And Historical Story Telling

I selected this book as a way to prepare for a trip to London. I wanted to get a feel for the city historically. The book delivered exactly what I wanted and kept me entertained the whole time. The narration was well done and the storylines were engaging. What I appreciated the most was the intertwining of geographic and historical facts.

Underwhelmed

I must say that I had high expectations for this book after reading “Paris”. Sadly it fell short. The story line and characters seemed to lack depth. Just not very memorable.
