Publisher's Summary

"Baltimore woman disappears during family vacation" declares the headline. Forty-year-old Delia Grinstead is last seen strolling down the Delaware shore, wearing nothing more than a bathing suit and carrying a beach tote with $500 tucked inside. To her husband and three almost-grown children, she has vanished without trace or reason. But for Delia, who feels like a tiny gnat buzzing around her family's edges, "walking away from it all" is not a premeditated act, but an impulse that will lead her into a new, exciting, and unimagined life.

Critic Reviews

"Perhaps no one writing fiction today can so clearly evoke middle-age angst as Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Tyler.... Poignant, warm, and quirky." (Library Journal)
"A fine story of mid-life changes and newfound realizations." (Midwest Book Review)

Great reading, good author, lackluster story

There's a lot of good parts to this story but overall what will have everyone in arms will be the conclusion of the book. Nothing is left tidy.

Another interesting, dysfunctional, family

Anne tyler's characters are always so believable to me. Most families have them. Anne's are just on steroids. This story started a little slowly, but soon had me anxious to find out what happens next. The ending had me in suspense until the last minute.

Enjoyed it again!

Would you listen to Ladder of Years again? Why?

Yes I can relate to many of Anne Tyler's books.

What did you like best about this story?

I think Anne Tyler puts down on paper what many of us experience in our family relationships.

What does Kelly Lintz bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I enjoyed the tone of her voice, the speed at which she read the story and the personalities she gave to the characters.

If you could rename Ladder of Years, what would you call it?

Poor narrator, unlikely plot

Is there anything you would change about this book?

the narrator. she made every old person sound senile.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Not Anne Tyler, though I normally like her books. Just need a break.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Her voices except for the main character were awful. She strained to portray the friend whose husband died with a voice that sounded so fake. Her imitation of elderly voices sounded like something from a high school play.

Was Ladder of Years worth the listening time?

NO. Also way too long.

Any additional comments?

This is the only Anne Tyler book that I've hated to date. I normally love her books, whether I read or listen to them.

Not One Of Tyler's Best

An unlikely storyline and characters whose actions don't ring true. I had to grit my teeth a few times to keep going with the story.

This is made worse by an irritating narrator who mispronounces so many words it becomes farcical. Why didn't anyone correct her?

not worth it.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

no. I like a book to add something to my life. Whether it's entertainment or something more. this did neither.

Would you be willing to try another one of Kelly Lintz’s performances?

no. she sounds like a teenage valley girl.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

no. not seductive or intriguing enough.

Everyday waste

This book is a pathetic story that leads to no comment except why.
There is no redeeming value to the books intent except to illustrate the mundane life of a woman.
