Publisher's summary

From the writer of Ghost Hunter, Little Women with Big Guns, and Krakenstein vs. Koalatron comes an unforgettable excursion into the depths of the unknown. Loaded end to end with chills, this terrifying narrative is loosely based on accounts of encounters with the legendary Pukwudgie, a cryptozoological "myth" originating in Massachusetts' mysterious Bridgewater Triangle.

Transplanting the action to his familiar Midwestern environs, writer Kevin Candela takes the listener on a hair-raising excursion into a shadowy world that exists in plain sight right beside our own, sending the tale's narrator deep into a frozen marsh in mid-January in search of the diminutive yet incredibly frightening entity. When he finally discovers the truth, both he - and the listener - will never be the same again.

Campfire story

Imp would make an excellent campfire story. It is scary, suspenseful, and fast paced. The narrator makes you think that you are hearing the main character speak. It is a perfect story for a long walk thru the woods.

Rate based on content or writing??

I rate this book overall on writing, if I rate it based on the story I’d give it 2 stars ...here’s my reason...
This is the story of a person devoid of empathy. Aside from the drunken idea it would be cool to catch a myth, I saw not point to why he insisted on capturing the imp.
“I shook the cage a couple of times and watched it slide around on the sheet metal floor. I shook it a little harder, and watched Impy flop around like a corpse. My nerve was coming back and .... I shook cage even harder, hard enough to bang Impy off the cage bars a few times... just to keep it unconscious, you know.” And all this after he ruined one of its eyes! At this point I was hoping for a miraculous escape and a deep well deserved bite to the man in retaliation from the poor Imp. When it did retaliate the guy got angry at it and got more aggressive.
I must say, this behaviour towards another living thing repulses me, it’s like the kid with a magnifying glass chasing ants. I had a hard time reading about this man’s actions and finishing the book. However, I wondered where the story was headed and I’d agreed to review it, so I trugged on. There is a conclusion to the story and I think the result had to do with the guy’s lack of empathy.

This is the first book I’ve read/listened to by this author. I would not say this was a poorly written book so I would be willing to listen to another by this author.

This is the first book I’ve listened to by this narrator and I would listen to another. There were few characters in this short story so not many distinct voices were needed, but he did well bringing this story to life.

There are no explicit sex scenes, excessive violence or swearing.

A Strange Little Story

This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this unbiased, voluntary review.

This book may have been the strangest thing I have ever listened to. I’m still not sure if it was brilliant or if I’m still recovering from shock.

The short story was written well, but not impressive. I definitely felt that the confused and scared average joe of a protagonist was written as he should be. Impy seemed to be whatever the author wanted, had random powers, and was a disgusting and hated creature. All in all, the story was well written and didn’t try to be something it wasn’t.

Gary Bennett was an okay performer. When he was talking (except at the end), I felt my mind wandering and finding it hard to pay attention. I contribute this to Bennett’s monotone voice and smooth delivery. But when I was focused, I throughly enjoyed listening to him.

A Good Story of Things That Go Bump in the Night..

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

I did like the story even though I can never understand why anyone would want to get in the kind of trouble the main character chooses to be. It's not as if he has no alternatives... I guess curiosity killed the cat...and more. I also noted a little mean streak in Kevin who pursues the "Imp" at great length and personal risk. And again: why? But so the tale goes... The writing is excellent and if you are a friend of horrific graphic descriptions, this book is for you. I'm not sure that the fantastical creature fits the description of an imp (a small, mischievous devil or sprite) as at the end it is not that at all, but it does give you the idea that you are dealing with an entity not easily definable. This Imp however is not always the one that victimizes, but it's a victim in turn, at least while in captivity. You might even feel sorry for it...
I loved the narrator's performance as it added to the suspenseful atmosphere of the audiobook.

I really enjoyed this story, and even though it's on 2 hours long nothing feels rushed. I feel like the story was told in full with. nothing missing, the narrator was also very enjoyable to listen to.

A puck-what-ie? Wedgie? I'm already freaking out

Kevin Candela has just suddenly appeared on Audible, and has been cranking out some fantastic tales. I really liked his Ether Bunny, and so I just had to see what else he had dreamed up. Havng heard of the Pukwudgie from Spooky Southcoast, and some paranormal books I just could not pass this up.

I want to say that Candela really knows how to write a short tale. I'm putting him up there with some other favorites of mine such as Roma Grey and Essel Pratt. I love them both for being able to tell a great story in a short period of time. Not all brilliant things need 100 plus pages to get to a point. Candela is one of those writers who can convey all the elements of a horror story without excessive plot points. He brings in the creep factor, and develops characters better than most authors do in three hundred pages. This story hits a lot of points that I enjoy including crytozoology, horror, fantasy, and little people. The story really drives its point home without mercy, and you will love it for it. He really crafts a tale out of a relatively unknown cryptid, and has fun dragging you into the swamp.

Bennett brings this tale to murky life, really selling the creepiness, and making you clench your teeth from anticipation. I really enjoy his work. Even though I did receive a promo code for this review it in no way influenced my considerations of the material, and in fact, inspired me to be more honest. In fact, getting a code generally makes me harsher as a reviewer as I am more often concerned what someone like Me will decide based on my review.

Do you dare step into the swamp?

This is a dark story that dives right into the swampy world of myth and cryptozoology, and that's a world that fascinates me. Gary Bennett really did a great job with the narration of this rather wild tale... he made me believe it was the truth he was relating to me!
If you like Dark Fantasy with a touch of Horror, and you dare to step into the swamp, then this short story is exactly what you need!
