Character of a Child

This is quite simply one of the most beautiful, heart rendering stories I have ever heard. Breaking down every barrier, looking deep into the human spirit, revealing the good in a boy who had every reason to be bitter, to be broken beyond repair, this historical tale brings the reader from the child's escape from a concentration camp through his journey through Europe. The genuine, forthright way that David deals with his environment, the people he meets, those who would harm him or help him is touching, amazing, thought provoking. That a child who had escaped from a lifetime in a concentration camp could have such compassion and reasoning of right and wrong, that he would choose to believe in "the God of the green pastures" . . . the God of the David in the Bible . . . well, it goes to show that words, even few words spoken to children with ears to hear are sometimes retained. Though the book is historical fiction, it is true to the times, and well could have happened. God bless those who lost family members in the concentration camps . . . God bless those who survived . . . and God help us all who let it happen.

Well worth a listen

I've loved this book since I had to read it in year 8 at school. The story is intriguing and the main character, David, grows and develops as the story unfolds. It was well read and flowed smoothly. I'd definitely recommend this one!

Wonderful

My sixth grade teacher read this to us once and for some reason I still remember it, at least bits and pieces, till now almost two decades later. I decided to hear it again and I'm glad I did. The narration was excellent. The story is exquisite, with so many important themes and I think some gospel overtures as well. Very well worth it!

Profound!

I don't know where to start...I don't know how to use mere words to say why you must read or listen to this story...I can only say, you MUST. Your life will be made richer for taking this journey with David. So much to learn. What will you recognize in yourself? In others? Read this story and then tell someone else to read this story. I am grateful to the writer for sharing this with us all. Many, many thanks!

What was one of the most memorable moments of I Am David?

[Spoiler alert] When Maria helps him smile for the first time.

Not sure. But his narration is delightful.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

See the God of green pastures at work!

So beautiful it broke my heart

Never knew a children's story could move me to tears quite like this one did. To see the world through this special little boys eyes and to see the inner workings of his mind, pure and just.

A boy called David and his journey home.

I read the book years ago, and having listened to it, I'm still disappointed with the ending. Other then that it's good.

How I Feel About this Book

I loved it, the story was really nice, the narrator was really good and my most memorable moment was, unfortunately, when the dog died.
I'm so sad about the dog but I loved the story and the narrator was great.

"I am David" is riveting and unforgettable.

I had read this book many years ago and always wanted to read it again but it was very hard to find. This audible version was really good to listen to, and it was hard to make myself stop listening. The narrator had a pleasant voice and did an excellent job. The story of David's escape from a concentration camp and his long and difficult journey alone and mostly on foot, through several different European countries as a twelve-year-old boy to find somewhere safe to live, is eye-opening and well worth reading or listening to.

Very emotional

It is a very hard core and specific book. You must have a specific knowledge to read it. The story is not the best but the way she has written it in a deep and personal way. Attending to every detail makes it worthwhile reading this book.
