Publisher's summary

The worldwide bestseller by the author of The Alchemist takes us on a journey back in time, from South America to Holland to Nepal, drawing on the rich experiences of his own life to relive the dreams of a generation that longs for peace. • "A novelist who writes in a universal language." —Los Angeles Times

In Hippie, he tells the story of Paulo, a young, skinny Brazilian man with a goatee and long, flowing hair, who dreams of becoming a writer, and Karla, a Dutch woman in her twenties who has been waiting to find a companion to accompany her on the fabled hippie trail to Nepal.

After meeting each other in Amsterdam, she convinces Paulo to join her on a trip aboard the Magic Bus that travels from Amsterdam to Istanbul and across Central Asia to Kathmandu. As they embark on this journey together, Paulo and Karla explore a love affair that awakens them on every level and leads to choices and decisions that will set the course for their lives thereafter.

I just couldn’t find a stopping point!

Hippie flows so easily throughout each and every chapter. After reading a few of Paolo’s books beforehand, this book is exponentially more interesting. Love, once again, wins!

Beautiful adventure.

I love a story of unexpected adventure. Mr. Coehlo has the most amazing stories. The narrator did a phenomenal job of delivering the story.

Enjoyable listen.

I enjoyed the book, but expected a more detailed and longer story. I liked the Alchemist better.

Not bad but not awesome

I was quite bored with this novel of his. I did enjoy listening to the experience but I found it to be a little dull. There are some great takeaways and do not intend on completely discounting the book. Still worth a listen, just not the greatest.

What is this Book Even About?

Paulo Coelho is one of my favorite authors but this book does nothing for me. I've noticed what I feel is a tendency in his later novels to try to save them in the closing chapters however, this one was so rambling and all over the place that it could not be done. I still have no idea what the point of this book was. Sad but I feel he's lost his way when it comes to his writing.

Touchingly beautiful

You want to be sitting in that cafe in Istanbul with Paolo and Carla. You want to never get up and leave. As an old hippie and still proud to call myself that I can completely relate to the experience Coelho narrates, taken from his own story of his passage into adulthood. For me that story involved running to the bulls in Pamplona and a lime-plaster café on Mykonos but the hitchhiker love affairs were similar and the life lessons enduring. His memories are retold with such elegance that I am reminded why the hippies were one of the greatest and most consequential events of the 20th Century. This book is a sensory delight that only a great writer can provide. I will listen a second time.

Cultural Exploration and Denial

I have never related better to people gifted with excess. A ride with the rich and famous- '60s style.

Beautiful Story

Loved it. Definitely a great insight for the times and lifestyle of the hippies and what it meant to be one.
