This is a Classic

What did you love best about Hawaii?

The narrator keeps your attention focused on the story. The story is so realistic sometimes I forget it is a novel. I live in Hawaii and can perfectly picture the characters as they once lived in Hawaii.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Nyuk Tsin the Chinese woman kakooah. You will journey with her throughout her life. You feel her pain and share her happiness. I have a visual picture of her a your girl and an elderly woman in her silk jacket walking barefoot in Honolulu.

Which character – as performed by Larry McKeever and Fred Sanders - introduction – was your favorite?

I have no favorites there. They were all engaging and I was anticipating meeting them and learning more about their character.

If you could take any character from Hawaii out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Nyuk Tsin and I would want to go to her sons restaurant in China Town in Honolulu

Any additional comments?

Although this is a very long book, the format allow you to keep your place. I would recommend that if you can download the book in parts because it does take up so much disc space.

Incredible story and phenomenal narration

For such a LONG book, The narration was so pleasant and soothing to listen to. This definitely captured the racist tone of the times. Each race was equally at fault - it was a different time.
It amazes me how folks cry they are offended at everything in present time.

Paragraphs, anyone?

What disappointed you about Hawaii?

I read this book many years ago. It’s fantastic. Really looked forward to the audible version. It never occurred to me that it could be mutilated by a narrator who doesn’t understand paragraphs. Instead of allowing the narrative to flow, he pauses two to three seconds at the end of each paragraph. It is so distracting that I’m returning this book. Too bad.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Can’t read properly.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Other than the story, which I’ll reread in book form ... NONE

Aweful Performance

I can't comment on the story because the performance was so drab that I quit 15 hours in. The monotone voice with which the reader uses could could be rivaled by a computer. It may be worth the read, but it's not worth the listen.

Well Written Historical Fiction

I would recommend this book to someone that loves to read and intends to visit Hawaii. It’s long but the characters are interesting and well developed.

Are you kidding me?

I know this is an old novel, but did it have to be read with less emotion and flavor than a newspaper article? I couldn't get past the second section. I'm surprised I made it that far. I'm sure that Hawaii and its author James A. Michener live up to the fame of its time in the physical reading. I don't suppose I will ever know.
