Publisher's summary

In the beginning, Ezekiel "Easy" Rawlins and Raymond "Mouse" Alexander were merely two young men hitting the road. In a "borrowed" 1936 Ford, they head for Pariah, Texas on a mission to retrieve money from Mouse's stepfather so he can marry his EttaMae.

But on their steamy bayou excursion, Mouse chooses murder as a way out, while Easy's past liaison with EttaMae floats precariously in his memory. Easy and Mouse are coming of age - and everything they ever knew about friendship and about themselves is coming apart at the seams.

Mosley is a master of the time machine!

The early years of Easy and Mouse were as sharp edged as those most readers are familiar with. Get intro to Mama Jo, and the desperation of Raymond “mouse” and the tight wire walk that is Easy Rawlins life from the beginning. Worth the listen save the short erotica segment that always seems out of place to this reader.

Just Ok

I wanted more from a Walter Mosley book especially a Easy Rawlins story. I try and read all his stuff and this one left Me short.

Discography? Wonderful music throughout this production! Who is singing and playing. Would love to see the musicians credited!!

Loved the backstory to EZ and Mouses life. The reader was much better, this round.

First days of Easy and Mouse

More contemplative than later Easy Rawlins stories, in keeping with the protagonist recalling his formative years. Winfield’ again shows his mastery of multi-character narratives.

EZ RAWLINS W/ LISP?

I am a avid follower of the EZ Rawlins series , and anticipated this story. I LOVE EZ Rawlins and Mouse, but NOT this narrator. He takes the smooth from EZ and makes him sound like an old man and Mouse sounds like a whispering girl! This story explains the whole EZ, Mouse and Mama Jo connection but I struggled getting thru this book. Now... Michael Boatman IS EZ so PULEEZE let him continue to read for this series!!!

Yes indeed!

This a beautifully written and spoken story of a moment in time of The Black experience. Mosley is a master at what he does as is Winfield.

Easily weakest book in Easy Rawlins series

no disrespect to the dead, but I didn't like Paul Winfield as the narrator at all. maybe because I'm used to Michael Boatman and another narrator whose name I can't remember right now (their voices and cadence weren't that different) reading these stories. On top of that, there wasn't much to the story. Some of the main occurrences I already knew about from Easy reflecting on them in other books.

Masterful

Walter Mosley captures the heart of every American going through hard times as they learn about the realities of life; and the legendary actor, Paul Winfield reads EZ’s story with a command and innocence that only a child of this era (or should I say, a real veteran), The Great Migration, could. If you don’t know, then you don’t know.
