Publisher's Summary

What to do if Matthew, your secret lover of the past four years, finally decides to leave his wife and move in, just when you're thinking that you might not want him anymore?

Plan A: stop shaving your armpits; tell him you have a moustache that you wax every six weeks; stop having sex with him; pick holes in the way he dresses; don't brush your teeth, or your hair.

Plan B: accidentally on purpose, bump into his wife; give yourself a fake name and identity; befriend her; actually begin to really like her; buy a cat and give it a fake name and identity; befriend Matthew's children. Watch your whole plan go absolutely, horribly wrong.

    "Good British Chick Lit"

I hate the term "chick lit" but I couldn't think of another way to describe it - maybe "comedy for women". Anyway, I really enjoyed this one. I thought it was very funny, well written, and had an interesting plot. If you like Marian Keyes or Sophie Kinsella I would say give this one a try. The narration seemed a little fast at first but either she slowed down or I got used to it. Overall, great easy listen!

    "Light and Entertaining"

This is fun Brit-chick-lit: single London career gal approaching her sell-by date, trapped in job and affair with no bright hopes represented in either. It's got a neat, twisty plot that's not entirely predictable, nor too far-fetched. The characters are varied and fairly well fleshed out. Lots of "down with creepy men" vindictiveness, but pretty fair-minded, too. Aww, give it a go!

    "entertaining"

A nice, easy to read, girly novel. The plot was not too far fetched to be believable and kept you guessing. As a book I would find it a page turner and not too complex. The characters were very realistic and well developed. I was a bit sad when it ended as I had grown to like the characters and wanted to know what happens next.

    "Not a good read"

I enjoy a good chick lit book every now and then but this wasn't good at all. It is cute in the beginning but there is only so long you want to hear about someone complaining about their life. The only good thing i can say about this book is that I could listen to it while driving rather than taking up time reading it. As a book I would have just put it down. I do not recommend it.

    "lies, lies, lies"

I don't mind white lies, but this Helen / Elena just kicks it over the traces.
The first and the last two hours are fine, but rest is too fanciful.
Also, the narration was far from being elaborate, seemed rushed.

    "Laugh out loud"

My only disappointment with this book was that the author has not written any others at this point in time. Much has been said about Helen's langauge in the other reviews - it didn't bother me and I found it quite realistic. If you really don't like modern parlance I recommend Jane Austen. I just wish I had delivered Helen's parting words when I recently left a job. Funny from beginning to end and certainly never boring. I hope to hear more from this author.

    "Spoilt by an expletive"

?Getting Rid of Matthew? is beautifully read by Adjoa Andoh.
Sadly, what is a well-constructed story is spoiled for me by the excessive, gratuitous use of one four-letter word. Perhaps Jane Fallon feels it gives a modern authenticity to her work, but it really would not have detracted from the entertainment to have substituted something like ?Helen swore? occasionally.
As a very mature reader over the years I have seen various expletives burst into popularity and then fade away and I have used them myself! However, their repetition in print in what is otherwise a good read seems unnecessary and sad. It has put me off buying other Fallon works in future having been drawn to her by the Richard & Judy recommendation and being able to purchase the audio version in an unabridged edition.

"Great Storyline - Narration Unbelievably Good"

Great Storyline - Narration Unbelievably Good. Sort of chick-lit romance, that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Never known a narrator to make such a big contribution to the drawing of the characters.

"stick with it! quite funny 😉"

Slow starter but oh my... no spoilers ...but funny predicaments! a few actual chuckles & enjoyed more than initially expected & definitely worth a read. great narrator. even if Sophie had a very deep voice! 'Getting to know Helen' would be a very apt part 2... more please!

    "Alright"

I bought this book and read it around the time it came out and decided to download it to listen too on holiday.

I'd forgotten how much swearing there is in it and how much anti female language there is by other females. It's an easy listen/read but I probably won't listen to it again.

The narration for the most part was good but the voices weren't amazing they all sounded fairly similar and she gave most of the women characters stupid extremely high pitched voices

    "relationships lacked depth"

I found that some relationships lacked depth. Either the original story has been summarised or the book is superficial.

    "Getting rid of Matthew"

Right from the start I was hooked! Loved the pace and the way the Author made you want to hear more. A roller coaster of emotions. It left me wanting to listen to something else by Jane Fallon.

    "Enjoyable listen"

I enjoyed listening to 'Getting rid of Matthew' whilst sitting on a gloroius beach in Western Australia. It's an entertaining light hearted, comical story with interesting characters - it had me laughing out loud in a few places. However I must disagree with a previous reviewer, I wouldn't say that it was an hilarious read.
My only criticism is the swearing - I'm not adverse to swearing (I do it often enough!!!) but I felt that Jane Fallon used too many inappropriate swear words.
Overall, a good book & I'd recommend it if you are looking for something that is light hearted & fun to listen to.

    "Hilarious"

This is an absolutely hilarious listen; it had me laughing out loud in a variety of public places! Adjoa Andoh is one of my favourite narrators which made this recording even better. Both author and narrator give us an excellent insight in to the thoughts and feelings of Helen ?the other woman? and her hilarious escapades as she tries to shake off her long term boyfriend who has suddenly after four years left his wife for her. I found this to be a very original story and I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a good laugh.
