Publisher's Summary

Lucy Savage is not having a good week. Her cheating husband, Bradley, lobbed the final insult when he stood her up in divorce court. A dye job gone wrong has left her hair green. And someone is trying to kill her. To top it off, sexy cop Zack Warren is certain that the very same man Lucy is trying to wash right out of her hair is the same Bradley he wants to arrest for embezzlement. When someone shoots at her and then her car blows up, Zack decides she needs 24-hour police protection.

Next thing Lucy knows, Zack has moved in to her big Victorian house, making them both sleepless...and not just from things that go bump in the night.

"First half was light and fun but the silliness wore on me by the end"

At a romance conference I attended once an author’s panel talked about how frustrated they got with movie heroines who were just “too stupid to live”. By the end of this light, funny, screwball romance that’s unfortunately how I felt about Lucy. I listened to this book on Audible and gave this book three stars because I thoroughly enjoyed the first half, but by the last few chapters the dumb actions of the supposedly calm science teacher heroine, especially read in a very silly, girly high voice by the reader, became really irritating to me. The dogs were adorable throughout the book until the end when there were several crises and they seemed more like props in the book than like four real dogs. Says on Amazon that it was a reprint published in 2008 and am guessing it’s much older than that since they kept answering the house phone and I don’t think they used mobile phones in the book. I enjoyed the simplicity of not having smart phones in the book, though, it’s just the ridiculously silly plot (mild spoiler alert though I won’t give details: how could the police be so incompetent even when repeated major damage was being done to Lucy’s house? Why would 4 dogs react so calmly to that house damage? Am guessing the author doesn’t really own dogs.). Usually don’t write reviews but figured new Audible romance listeners may appreciate knowing not all reviewers give this book 4 or 5 stars. Takes so much time to listen to an audiobook that having a satisfying ending is even more important. Witty writing but just too shallow for me.

    "Super Camp"

I hate to be cruel to our sex, but this female geared novela took every single twist in the book, and put it together with some of the most absurd language I've ever imagine being published. I'm so sorry to say it, because I really wanted to like it, the beginning of the story opened well which is why I gave it 2 stars. Every character in the book was super stereotypical. And if I heard him say she was "a woman who needed to be kept" one more time, I was going to vomit. The fact that he actually called her dumb to her face multiple times was maddening enough. he was a teacher fascinated by physics physics for God's sake!
I don't really understand why it was under sizzling in the romance Factor, there was only one real sex scene, and it wasn't that great. I think my favorite part of the story, was the dogs.
The author herself read it in a style that would have been meant for a children's fairy tale which made it 10x worse to listen too. Possibly if she had a less rushed, less motherly like voice, and practiced her male voices, she might better win me over. But overall the production was rushed and her inflections were all wrong. It made me feel like Opie and Papa Smurf were battling it out for her "love".
the end, was also nothing to brag about. If you are listening to it for free, go ahead it's vaguely entertaining. However if you're considering paying even a dollar for it, I'd recommend looking somewhere else! This is something I would expect to pay a quarter for at a garage sale. Nothing more.

    "Cute distraction"

The heroine in endearing and quirky. The action is a bit weak, but it's a nice light, humorous plot. Would make a good bedtime listen.

    "not a skilled voice actor"

perhaps if the reader is not a skilled voice actor they should just read it straight. The "bad guys" sounded like nasal women and Tina the sister( I assume was from Ohio as Riverbend was also the setting for Trust Me on This) sounded like she was from the Southside of Boston. The story was good enough to gloss over some of the voice issues.

    "Great fun!"

humor, romance, suspense, mystery, relationships, dogs, law-enforcement

Another Crusie book guaranteed to have you snorting your caffeine! It's got a vintage house full of dogs named after physicists, more situational humor than a Mel Brooks movie, an embezzler, the bomb squad, and more. I first read it years ago and several times since, it never seems to lose its appeal!
This time I got the audio, and the narrator has the desired level of enthusiasm but the most annoying voice I've come across in a long time. I honestly would have preferred an AI.

    "more is more"

Not my favourite Crusie book, but light and funny. The first time I listened, I gave it 3 stars, but now I have listened to it many more times and the more I listen the more I like it. I don't know why, but this applies to most Crusie books.

Good characters and the performance was very entertaining. Predictable ending but with a few twists and turns to make the trip worthwhile.

"Absolutely terrible. A waste of time and money."

The story was so silly. I can't believe I finished listening. I usually like her books but this was not worth a penny.
