Publisher's Summary

Heartbroken and alone, Boston art curator Sarah West is grieving the recent deaths of her parents and the end of her marriage. Ultrasensible by nature, she's determined to stay the course to get her life back on track. But fate has something else in mind. While cleaning out her father's closet, she finds a letter from the famous Parisian courtesan Marthe de Florian, dated 1895. The subject? Sarah's great-great-aunt Louisa's death. Legend has it Louisa committed suicide...but this letter implies there's more to that story.

Determined to learn the truth, Sarah, against her nature, impulsively flies to Paris. There she's drawn into the world of her flatmate, the brilliant artist Laurent Chartier. As she delves deep into the glittering Belle Époque to unravel the mystery, Sarah finds that her aunt's story may offer her exactly what she needs to open up to love again.

Following Sarah in the present day and Louisa in the 1890s, this moving novel spans more than a century to tell the stories of two remarkable women.

Excruciating narration

This is a trite, predictable book, full of painfully familiar metaphors and Hallmark Channel-like romance. That aside, the narrator's interpretation of the voices made it almost intolerable to listen to for very long. All the accents sounded like what a high school actor would portray and her breathy voice for the main character made her sound like a schoolgirl. This is by far one of the worst audiobooks I have ever purchased.

HORRENDOUS NARRRATOR

I listened to the other two books by this author - and they were fantastic! I was sooo looking forward to book #3. This narrator with her ridiculous accents and portrayal of one of the main characters in the story - just killed it for me!!! I should've relied on the reviews for this one :(

Good mystery, good narrator.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, it's an easy listen.

Any additional comments?

So glad we're not so bound by "uppercrust" society these days, but the characters still made poor and selfish choices. It was a good clean mystery. Narration was good, but there was too much french in it for me, but she was really good with different voices. I would listen to her narration again and would listen to this author again.

Not my favorite

The story was hard to get into but leveled out and was enjoyable. I preferred the narrator from The House By The Lake but this narrator did an OK performance.

I must agree, great story but not great narration

I almost gave up on the story because of narration. It’s a very winding story and took entirely too long to unwind. It wanted to a romantic mystery and it is that but the narration made it an unpleasant journey to take.

Social expectation

A very sad book. We live our lives to fit into society expectations still trying to fulfill our own dreams.

A different choice

I usually like historical mysteries but this book was a little change and a very good choice for commute listening. It was a satisfying combination of historical content which was new to me about pre war Paris. And a pleasing sweet hopeful

I did not guess the ending. It was well presented and I loved the two interlock stories
