Publisher's summary

She's one of America's fairest and funniest ladies. Actress and screenwriter, director and comedienne, Fannie Flagg is also a most accomplished and high-spirited author. Said Kirkus of her first book, Coming Attractions: "It's subtitled 'A wonderful novel' and that's exactly what it is." Here is her second. Get ready, because it's going to make you laugh (a lot), cry (a little), and care (forever).

What is it? It's first the story of two women in the 1980s: gray-headed Mrs. Threadgoode tells her life story to Evelyn, who is in the sad slump of middle age. The tale she tells is also of two women, of the irrepressibly daredevilish tomboy Idgie and her friend, Ruth, who, back in the 30s, ran a little place in Whistle Stop, Alabama - a Southern kind of Café Wobegon offering good barbecue and good coffee and all kinds of love and laughter, even an occasional murder.

And as the past unfolds, the present, for Evelyn and for us, will never quite be the same.

Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café is folksy and fresh, endearing and affecting, with humor and drama, and with an ending that would fill with smiling tears the Whistle Stop Lake...if they only had a lake.

Disappointment

This wonderful novel was absolutely butchered in its audio version. It is a very small sample of the amazing stories you would find in the actual book. They removed almost the whole message and feel of the book from this version. It makes me very upset that I bought this audio book. Read the actual book; do not waste your time, money or credits on this audio book. There are better audio books out there.

Reader's Digest Version

I did not notice that the audio version was just under 2 hours long. That would have clued me in. Major events are covered in 2 minutes. A main character dies (Ruth) and it was skimmed over as if the character was a cafe patron who stopped for coffee. If you have seen the movie, you will be disappointed with this version. This version rushes the story. It was like they only had the recording studio for 2 hours and had to get it done and get out. A positive...Fannie Flagg is a fantastic narrator (reader). I loved her renditions of speech mannerisms and accents.

Total waste of money

They don’t make it clear that this is a shortened version of the book. DO NOT BUY THIS VERSION. Total rip off.

A Classic of the South

I love this story. The authors voice just takes me back to the wonderful innocent days of my youth and summers wandering over the trails and mountains of my home. The were the mountains of Southwest Virginia but the people were the same good women and men depicted by Ms Flagg.

whimsical, fun, draws you in

This story takes you back and forth from modern day to a time long past. The characters are formed well enough that you feel you know them, and look forward to what will happen next.
