Publisher's summary

Three-time Golden Globe nominated actress Denise Nicholas has won great acclaim for her debut novel. Spreadout beside Celeste on the train is a paper entitled How to Stay Alive in Mississippi. A young, privileged black woman from Detroit, Celeste has begun to realize she knows as little about her race as her white ex-boyfriend. So she heads to the South “to shore up her own Negro-ness” by volunteering during the Freedom Summer.

Growing up

I enjoyed the story. How it took me back to the 60’s and the life of those who were trying to make a change for Black Americans in the South

A loving Dad protects his daughter.

The narrator did an excellent job. This book was tremendous. It explored different themes. I felt like I was right there in Mississippi where Medgar Evers did his work before he was murdered in 1963.

Mediocre at best

The story would’ve been amazing if it was written better and had better character portrayals. Narrator did an amazing job and created a more exciting narrative the book couldn’t fully encapsulate with the narrators perfect accent and voicing.

not a fan

not very intellectually stimulating. I found myself not enjoying many portions of it because it didnt really have that "classic novel" feel that Ive been accustomed to. some people may enjoy it, but it's not really for me
