Publisher's summary

All Ida Mae Jones wants to do is fly. Her daddy was a pilot, and years after his death she feels closest to him when she's in the air.

But as a young black woman in 1940s Louisiana, she knows the sky is off limits to her, until America enters World War II, and the Army forms the WASP - Women Airforce Service Pilots.

Ida has a chance to fulfill her dream if she's willing to use her light skin to pass as a white girl. She wants to fly more than anything, but Ida soon learns that denying one's self and family is a heavy burden, and ultimately it's not what you do but who you are that's most important.

Wonderful story

Historical fiction is one of my favorite genres. This novel takes place during WW2, and tells of the heroic efforts of the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) but also of the reality of racism during that era. I really liked the main character, Ida Mae Jones, and felt sympathy for her struggle as a fair-skinned black woman, "passing" as white in order to serve her country. The narrator's voice was very good, and I could distinguish the different characters easily.

Brings humanity to history

I love that the author took real events from our countries history, and brought it to life using not only real historical people, but also putting her own creative spin on it.

Pilot

I am a private pilot and a woman. Love to hear and learn about the earlier struggles for those who love aviation.

Fly girl

Fly girl was a very amazing story of a girl who wanted to fly high and rose to the challenge of becoming a W.A.S.P. She took the risk of people finding out just to do what she loved. It’s a very inspiring story!!!

Loved it!!!

A gold nugget of enlightenment!

I love history and especially seek out lesser known figures who have made significant contributions but don't appear in the white male history to which we are most exposed. More than just another unsung hero story, Ms Smith gives readers/listeners a personal sense of the difficulty women in particular and women of color specifically face when breaking into a white male dominated arena. Her empathetic characterization of the turmoil of passing for white is inspired. Thank you for enriching my understanding.

Great YA Story

I connected with the characters immediately. I felt the fear, joy, anger, hope and concern that the protagonist did as I got inside her head. It was effective without graphic violence or language. I also learned about female pilots during WWII.
The performer was great!
