. . .almost like playing chess

Reading Edmund Crispin's stories is such fun! You keep guessing which way the story will take you next. And Philip Bird is si good at bringing the characters to life that you expect to meet them at your door, not on the page.

Elegantly crafted short stories

Similar to Beware of the Trains, this book is a compilation of short stories, some featuring Fen and Humbleby and some without either. One or two have a nasty twist in the tail but on the whole are satisfying. Narration is excellent. I didn't enjoy this as much as Beware of the Trains (and one story is repeated from there) but on the whole, it's a worthwhile buy.

Great Crispin shorts

A good collection of short stories. Well read. One for the Crispin/Fen fan or a lover of classic crimes.
