Publisher's Summary

Inspirational Readers Choice Award winner Cathy Marie Hake, CBA best-selling author of Bittersweet , blends wholesome humor and timeless truth into historical novels that ring with authenticity. When 17-year-old Lady Sydney Hathwell arrives in 1890 New York City, she never imagines she'll soon be galloping about the Wild West, unchaperoned - and dressed as a man. Honoring her father's dying wish, Sydney journeys from England to consider marrying Manhattan businessman Rexall Hume. After finding him unsuitable, she reveals her verdict. But with Hume insisting on marrying her anyhow, she seeks refuge with her estranged uncle. Disguising herself as an Englishman, Sydney flees the city on a westbound train. But when it's clear her uncle has no use for a female on his Texas ranch, "nephew Fancy Pants" continues the ruse. As unexpected developments unfold, Sydney fears her deception may jeopardize friendship, family, and much more.

Great!

"Fancy Pants" was a great listen! The speaker had a great voice and used a variety of voices for the characters. It was a very smooth transition between people.

Misogynistic Religious Romance

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Eliminate the brutish treatment--it detracts from the plot line.

Would you ever listen to anything by Cathy Marie Hake again?

probably not.

Any additional comments?

Book description reads like historical fiction, adventure, and romance. Two-thirds of the way through the book, the guy running the ranch suddenly becomes the pillar of Christianity and decides that the heroine needs saving (in the religious way). But he is a horrible example of male Christianity in his attitude that the nephew; needs to be made into a man through rough and unkind treatment, then treating the heroine in the same rough and unkind manner because he looked like a fool. If you need to read a good book with religious themes without misogyny, then try Ordinary Grace or Water From My Heart to see how a man can love God, but not be a brute for the sake of romance.

Wonderful!

Heart-warming and laugh-out-loud funny. The narrator, while not perfect at keeping characterizations consistent, does a great job of conveying the emotions of each scene. I highly recommend for those who like western romances, where females disguise themselves to infiltrate the men’s world, and stories with a positive faith message.
