magnificient!

This is a wonderfully plotted and scripted story that tells the tale of the events of the early 20th Century that set the stage for all that followed over that 100-year period. Ken Follett gives us the history as told and illustrated through his great and varied group of characters. Follett's fine writing and the great narration by John Lee entertainingly bring to life a period that is often misinterpreted when looking back through that period. I can hardly wait to see where Follett's characters take us as part 2 leads us into the post-Great War decades.

Yes, I will listen again because the book is filled with engaging characters, sweeping history and seamless integration of different characters.

Billy Williams because he is such a good person.

The Rise of the Poor.

I went through this in 5 days and night. It is an easy listen with soap opera like fictional plots against historical facts -

Mood counts

Perhaps it is only me, but reviews make me nervous. It isn't only that we are all individuals, it's that we have literary moods. Mine run from historical fiction through history on to brain candy horror. If I read a book I'm not in the mood to listen to I always hate it, until I turn back to it in the right mood, then I love it. So if your mood is for a long, well researched, rendition of how green was my valley, you'll love this. Add warm fire, and a comfy chair for added bliss.

Please vote yes on another great book by Follett

I was not deterred from Fall of Giants by the negative reviews, and I am comfortable to say this is as good as the other works of Ken Follett. He paves a perfect path with the events and characters he describes. It was easy to follow each character as the novel progressed. John Lee did an outstanding job with his narration. I hope you will enjoy this as much as I did. Please look at my other comments on other books, let me know with a yes or no if they are helpful. Thanks.

Good story, well told

Much better than the two earlier novels, a bit more believable and quite well read.

Pillars of the Earth meets Winds of War

Another epic by Ken Follett along the lines of Pillars of the Earth. Follett does his best work when dealing with historical fiction. He does an excellent job developing believable characters that entice the reader to fall in love with them. He paints a vibrant, if somewhat simplistic, picture of Europe before the onset of WW1 through its conclusion. Unlike Pillars, in this novel, protagonists and villains are not so clearly delineated, and even the antagonistic characters are endearing. I look forward to the second in this planned trilogy.

Great way to learn history

Ken Follet is a master at weaving history into fiction! I feel like I have a better understanding of the World War I era after listening to this book. John Lee is my favorite audiobook narrator. He makes keeping track of all the different characters and their nationalities easy.
The reason for four stars instead of five is the obvious political slant throughout the book. The liberals in the book are brilliant leaders and the conservatives are dumb dummies. I still loved the 36+ hours of listening!

A Masterpiece

This is an amazing book. This book is better then the pillars of the earth. It gives early 20th century a practical and a human face. WARNING: If you are an ultra conservative, if you do no like history or facts, or if you are a religious fanatic: This book may not be for you. For the other 90% of the people you will love it. I could not stop listening to this book.

Very Long, but well worth it

I read Ken Follet's Pillars of the Earth and loved the first half of it and hated the second half. This one was excellent and I enjoyed the entire book. The historical content is superb and the story was compelling. I cannot wait for the next saga.
