Editorial reviews

Allison Bergeron finds herself in another sticky situation in this the 7th book, of Maggie Barbieri’s Murder 101 series. She figures throwing her stepdaughters a birthday party is the right thing to do even if it means being around her husband's dysfunctional ex in-laws. All good deeds don’t go unpunished, though, and when the girls’ estranged uncle shows up with $5,000 for each and subsequently turns up dead with a mattress full of cash, Allison finds she can’t help but get involved. Gayle Hendrix returns with her sassy take on the hip young amateur sleuth who seems to attract mystery. A fun, engrossing listen for fans of the series or contemporary female takes on the mystery genre.

Publisher's summary

Alison Bergeron has her doubts about hosting a birthday party for her twin stepdaughters, seeing as it’ll include all of her new husband’s ex-in-laws. Still, she’s a good sport, and everyone has a great time, especially the girls, who receive $10,000 from their estranged uncle, Chick.

The girls’ father, NYPD Detective Bobby Crawford, and Christine, his ex, think the gift is too much. When Crawford swings by Chick’s apartment to return it, he finds Chick dead, with roughly $250,000 stuffed in his mattress. The death is ruled a suicide, but Christine isn’t convinced, and even Alison can’t help but admit that there must be a lot more to Chick’s death than meets the eye.

Extra Credit, the latest in Maggie Barbieri’s stellar Murder 101 series, finds Alison and Bobby delving into family secrets they’d both rather leave untouched.

Fun and engaging

I have every title in this series. They were great fun to listen to. I can see several different ways they could take the story and keep going on. I am excitedly anticipating what might come next!

Mystery 101 series engaging and complex

Yet another, and I hope not her last success, in this most captivating series Mystery101. Although, I am not sure how ma y times one English Professor can be kidnapped in a lifetime Extra Credit found a way to keep it real. MS Barriers adds a richness to each character no matter how minor and draws you into the mystery inch by inch. I have really enjoyed this series and hope to see more soon. Ms. Hendrix provides a consistent understandable reading but the differentiation of individual characters is lacking, although I am not sure how one reader could provide all the characters to life it is often hard to recognize even the main characters speaking/ thinking voice.
