Publisher's summary

A lively, sexy, and thought-provoking East-meets-West story about community, friendship, and women's lives at all ages - a spicy and alluring mix of Together Tea and Calendar Girls.

Every woman has a secret life....

Nikki lives in cosmopolitan West London, where she tends bar at the local pub. The daughter of Indian immigrants, she's spent most of her 20-odd years distancing herself from the traditional Sikh community of her childhood, preferring a more independent (that is, Western) life. When her father's death leaves the family financially strapped, Nikki, a law school dropout, impulsively takes a job teaching a "creative writing" course at the community center in the beating heart of London's close-knit Punjabi community.

Because of a miscommunication, the proper Sikh widows who show up are expecting to learn basic English literacy, not the art of short-story writing. When one of the widows finds a book of sexy stories in English and shares it with the class, Nikki realizes that beneath their white dupattas, her students have a wealth of fantasies and memories. Eager to liberate these modest women, she teaches them how to express their untold stories, unleashing creativity of the most unexpected - and exciting - kind.

As more women are drawn to the class, Nikki warns her students to keep their work secret from the Brotherhood, a group of highly conservative young men who have appointed themselves the community's "moral police". But when the widows' gossip offers shocking insights into the death of a young wife - a modern woman like Nikki - and some of the class erotica is shared among friends, it sparks a scandal that threatens them all.

Critic reviews

"Meera Syal is a wonderful choice as narrator because her British accent and mastery of an ironic tone make the most of the lively descriptions and Nikki's sardonic interior monologues.... For those who are unfamiliar with Sikh culture or this part of London, this is an informative and entertaining listening experience." (AudioFile)

Eat pray love blended with Shantaram with a dose of Bridget Jones

One of my favorite books of all time. Unlike other Indian fiction these days. It is heartwarmingly heartbreakingly authentic including slang. For reference: Sat Siri Akal is a greeting which means "May you have a long blessed life". It is a listen you don't want to miss.

Excellent

I loved this. Thought it was absolutely brilliant and poetically written. The characters were rich and loveable and fun to listen to. The stories...oh man the STORIES. Passionate, beautiful, honest...made my heart skip a beat sometimes. I powered through this, found myself wrapped into the drama and the beauty. This isn't just a good book, but an important one. Women need support like these, stories like this that empower them and tell the painful stories. This kind of honesty is so necessary for us to be heard and understood. I want every woman to read this.

Great surprise

I should have written this review as soon as I put the book down because I had so many great things to say about this book. Now after several days I can't recall all the details only the following: great crew of characters, funny and sad, not all about the erotic but enough to make it steamy, a mystery and a learning experience about Indian culture all in beautiful prose.

Erotic stories and great plot twists!

What did you love best about Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows?

The surprising plot twists.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows?

Either when the woman tied the mechanic down on the hood of the car and had her way with him or the tailor who had an lover made out of bolts of clothe.

What does Meera Syal bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I never would have experienced Punjabi widows sexual fantasies.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes, I had an extreme reaction to this book. We will just leave it at that.

Any additional comments?

This is 50/50 plot and eroticism. It made for a good balance, but not something to listen to with the kids.
