WELCOME TO THE RUSHMORE INN

The bed and breakfast was hidden in the hills of West Virginia. Wary guests wondered how it could stay in business at such a creepy, remote location. Especially with its bizarre, presidential decor and eccentric proprietor.

ONCE YOU CHECK IN...

When the event hotel for the national Iron Woman triathlon accidentally overbooked, competitor Maria was forced to stay at the Rushmore. But after checking into her room, she quickly realized she wasn't alone. First her suitcase wasn't where she put it. Then her cell phone was moved. Finally, she heard an odd creaking under the bed. Confusion quickly turned to fear, and fear to hysteria when she discovered the front door was barred and the windows were bricked over. There was no way out.

...YOU'LL BE DYING TO LEAVE

One year later, four new female athletes have become guests of the Inn. Will they escape the horrors within its walls? Or will they join the many others who have died there, in ways too terrible to imagine?

A Word of Warning

Originally scheduled to be released in paperback in 2010, the publisher read the final version of the manuscript and refused to release it.

This is a disturbing, terrifying book. You may think you're brave enough to handle it. But you're probably not...

Gross, Disgusting, Sick & Gruesome

I have to say that this was the most gross, gory, disgustingly sick book I've ever read or heard. Yes.... I listened to the whole thing - to see where the author would go next. When I read the review, it sounded like an interesting storyline and the first chapter or two drew me in - people missing in the woods and a scary motel. But the sick, bloody ideas that this author created makes me actually wonder about him - how can an author even come up with this? Without telling too much about the actual story - it's totally far-fetched & unbelievable. The author relies on gore to create a 'story'. The narrator turned out to be just the right person to read this type of book - his voice is creepy and sounds like a back-hills sociopath. If you like blood & guts, are on the border of being a serial killer yourself and like to look at bloody accident scenes, then this book is for you.

Overall it was enjoyable

‘Endurance’ isn’t the best work in the ‘Afraid’ series. Normally these books are non-stop from start to finish with action, blood and gore, and while this story starts with a hook to get you in, that’s about it for a good portion of the book while the author builds some background and introduces a TON of characters. Once the action gets going though there isn’t much of a let up, but it didn’t feel as gory as some of the others in the series (maybe I’ve been reading too many horror stories to get in the Halloween spirit). Overall, I thought it was enjoyable and probably made for those who might complain that others books the author puts our are too much.

Very gruesome.

I enjoyed another of Jack Kilborn's psychotic thrill rides. I love that he was able to throw in a twist amongst all the gory horror. The details that develop the imagery built monsters in my head. I will continue to be a fan.

Don't waste the credit

This book is basically bad Wrong Turn fan-fiction narrated by a cross between Foghorn Leghorn and Andy Griffith. From some of the other reviews, you'd think it would have been nothing but gore, but it's really not. If you want something along the same lines, but better, try Off Season by Jack Ketchum. Seriously, listen to the sample first, because that's what you're stuck with for ten hours if you can't stand the narration.

TWISTED!!!!

If you like horror stories, you'll love this one. Christopher Lane's narration was excellent and the story kept me on the edge of my seat. I couldn't stop listening even as the evening hour became late and the action freaked me out.

Lame

I got this on a BOGO deal, so at least it was free. I'm only about 30 minutes into it, but doubt I'll finish. First, the narrator uses a Southern accent for most of the action, which baffles me. I guess it's because the story takes place in West Virginia. But I found the accent irritating and confusing -- the protagonists don't have Southern accents. Lane does a great job with creating different voices for different characters, but that's not enough to save this book.

The author can write fairly well, but the story is so lame. In a nutshell, it appears to be the standard "crazy cannibal family" and torture porn we're all so used to from endless Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Hills Have Eyes, and countless spin-off movies. I don't go to these movies because I dislike excessive violence, murder and torture for its own sake.

When I think of "horror" I think of writers like H.P. Lovecraft, Edgar Allen Poe, and Richard Matheson. Writers who can convey a sense of absolute dread and unease, instead of merely relying of stereotypical crazy maniacs and bloody gore.
