Publisher's Summary

Rachel Stone is a widow and single mother, broke and alone. Worse, her late husband, a televangelist, stole five million dollars, none of which came to her. Nor did she know about the theft, but it still makes her an outcast, and she is desperate. Then she meets Gabriel Bonner, who gives her a job. Romantic sparks fly, but love is never easy. Gabriel has a tragic loss of his own, and his family, fearing Rachel's motives, campaigns loudly against her.

Mostly sad until the end, but the ending was nice.

I’ve given 5 stars to many of S E Phillips’ books, but this book gets 4 stars because it was too sad. Most of the sadness was grieving for dead loved ones and being treated badly by others. I generally prefer uplifting or funny stories. Gabe wanted to kill himself and had a hard time after his wife and son were killed by a drunk driver. Rachel was married to an unethical tv evangelist. He convinced people to give him money that he used to enrich himself. He died in a plane crash and the public hated Rachel, thinking she was his partner, but she too had been taken advantage of. She lives in poverty, with her 5 yr old son.

I read the paperback twice and recently listened to the audiobook. I liked it better the second and third time since I was prepared for the sadness. I could better appreciate how Rachel reacted defiantly to her circumstances which nudged Gabe. For example page 194 “She smiled again, and pleasure leached into some of the barren places inside him. He thought about how she managed to find amusement in the smallest things, even with her life hanging in shreds around her.”

I loved Rachel's smartness, witty comments and actions in the face of poverty and ill treatment by others. I enjoyed the secondary story about Kristy and Ethan.

I think Susan Elizabeth Phillips is a wonderful writer. One of the reasons is character creation. I’m reminded of Sol Stein’s advice to writers: “Imbue your heroes with faults and your villains with charm.” The characters in this story are a good example. Rachel is homeless, no money, no job, and caring for her son. Ethan is a minister who refuses to help her. Gabe is a recluse due to grief. He is hostile and mean to Rachel and tells her to go away. When the cops start to arrest her for vagrancy, Gabe is the only one to come to her rescue and finds her a place to live and gives her a job.

A little rough but good.

Susan Elizabeth Phillips does an amazing job with making me have the feelies for this story. Adore Rachel and her inner strength to conquer the past. She's truly a good person, even when no one believes her to be one. I also love how she exacts revenge on Cal and Ethan in the end. That was awesome. I like how Gabe comes to realize that he can love again after tragedy. Overall, a pretty darn good story. If you are in a need of a good cry, Dream a Little Dream is a go to read.

It was no Supprice .

What does Anna Fields bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She is a great narrator.... I usually don't like females narrators but she is the exception .
