Zur Rahmenhandlung: Der "Herausgeber" des Textes besucht den offenbar sehr gebildeten Berghirten Ludovico, von den Einheimischen der Ketzer genannt, auf der Alpe in dessen Steinhütte. Ludovico trägt dem Besucher eine selbst verfasste Geschichte vor - es handele sich um eine wahre Geschichte. Freilich seien die Namen erfunden.
Diese Geschichte des Berghirten bildet die Binnenerzählung: Der um die 25 Jahre alte Priester Francesco Vela stammt "aus gutem Hause", lebt asketisch, strahlt eine exemplarische Frömmigkeit aus und erscheint den - vorwiegend weiblichen - Gliedern seiner Gemeinde von einer Duftwolke der Heiligkeit eingehüllt. Dann aber trifft ihn ein Begebnis mit solcher Gewalt, dass er vor tiefster Verzweiflung und überwältigender Verzückung fast wahnsinnig wird.
In welchem Verhältnis Rahmen- und Binnenhandlung zu einander stehen, offenbart sich dem Hörer am Ende. Geahnt hat er es längst.

sublime
the rich and evocative imaginary never loses its grip on me. with the years, the storyline and the patriarchal perspective have become a bit trite, but the power of the realization on how deeply rooted mankind is in nature is an epiphany every adolescent should encounter.
