Publisher's Summary

Vy Aleknos is the leader of a hawk shifter flock. Openly gay since he was a teen, Vy is proud and self-assured on the outside, while secretly worrying he'll be forced to spend his life alone because two males can't be mates. When bear shifter Robert Cimino appears in Vy's small town, Vy realizes his concerns were unfounded - he has a male mate, and a sexy, dominant one to boot.

Robert is a bear shifter who refuses to shift. Immediately attracted to Vy, he deviates from his normal pattern and seeks more than a one off with the powerful, bristly hawk. But Robert's affections are rooted in his human form, and when Vy discovers Robert doesn't recognize him as his mate, he pulls away. If Robert wants to stay with Vy, he must convince a man deeply ruled by his animal instincts to give their relationship as humans a chance.

A Good Story...

I first read this book on my Kindle and then Audible offered a great price for the audio version...and because I enjoyed the book...This is a good collaboration between Cardeno C. & Mary Calmes. I am a fan of both authors and this was a great read. I had a bit of trouble in the first chapter, learning about the hawk world but once I got it...I got it. I related quite a bit with Vy, though I am as large as Robert. Great one liners and a great romance!
Greg Tremblay did a great job, but I have been a fan of his for some time...

Not your typical shifter book

I loved this book!! I'll be honest, I put it off because I had heard "mixed" reviews. I'm happy to say I am clearly in the "loved it" category. Robert and Vy are a great couple. This is not your typical shifter book. It tackles a question you don't often see in shifter books, what are the ramifications if a shifter refuses to shift and does not embrace his animal? What happens to the "soul bond?" I think Ms. Calmes and Ms. Cardeno did an excellent job with the story and the various "control" issues it tackles. And the narrator, Greg Tremblay, just made a good story, great. He delivered such warmth and depth to the characters, that I had a really hard time putting this down. I hope this is not the last we hear from this couple. Definitely worth a credit.

Love me some Greg Tremblay

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, If you have not listened to Greg Tremblay, you are missing out. He could turn a badly written story into a winner. But saying that, we have Mary Calmes and Cardeno C, need I say more! Two of my favorite writers in the M/M genre. It's a good story with great narration!

Which scene was your favorite?

Too many to state. I love when Vy recognizes his Mate and he fights to prove he is strong.

Who was the most memorable character of Control and why?

I love Vy and his second in command

Cute story. Great narration.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

If I had a friend that was into m/m romance, I would totally recommend this audiobook mostly because the narration is top notch.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Control?

When Robert first shifted to his bear and was cuddly with Vy.

Which character – as performed by Greg Tremblay – was your favorite?

Greg used this sexy deeper voice for Robert...yummy.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No extreme reaction because it wasn't too angsty a book, though I did tear up a couple of times.

Any additional comments?

Nice story to listen to when you can't sleep at night. Nothing too deep to make you ponder. Just a sweet story.

This story is wonderful!

I have previously only read shifter stories w/ wolves, and was unsure about reading a book about Hawks and a bear. I am so glad I did, this story was so good, so enjoyable, so fulfilling. I really loved it, hope these guys write more such charming stories. Greg Tremblay did a super job.

Didn't care for the CardenoC/Calmes collaboration

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Sadly, yes. Have Mary Calmes write it. It's just too sappy, which is typical of Cardeno C stories. Calmes brings more realistic characterizations and more meat to her books. The sex scenes were overly long, over-the-top, toothache inducing, eye-rolling, melodramatic segues I simply endured.

Did Greg Tremblay do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Yes, he did. He's very talented with voices, modulation, and tone. However, at least in this audiobook, he was "over acting". That constant stuttery, breathy quality he gave to Robert, and his monotonic inner narrative, drove me crazy. Not a fan.

Was Control worth the listening time?

The base story was actually good. But the amount of eye rolling, skipping forward through the never-ending, melodramatic sex scenes, and listening to Tremblay's Robert...... no, not really. I'd suggest reading the book.

Any additional comments?

THIS WAS A RELISTEN: After listening to hundreds of audiobooks and narrators over the years, it really was a different experience this time. While Trembly is a basically a good narrator, I found his Robert to be nearly intolerable on top of Cardeno C's sappy interpretation of the character. Robert's inner narrative was monotonic and Tremblay slipped into this stuttery, breathy dialogue that was untenable to me. And the abundant sex scenes are far too sappy and melodramatic. Give me a Sam & Jory or a Miro & Ian sex scene any day. I won't be reading anymore of Cardeno C's books, even when collaborating with a favorite author. Not my cuppa.

I found the story to be okay

Any additional comments?

I haven't read many shifter books. They don't appeal to me in theory. But this is Cardeno C. and Mary Calmes, so I was willing to put my baggage aside.Basically this boils down to a typical Cardeno C "I want to take care of you!" hero (Robert) and a not-so-typical Calmes "I've got baggage and drama" character ("Vy").
Vy, a hawk shifter who is the kaur of his ket (basically the leader of his people and that is VERY IMPORTANT because we are reminded Vy is the Kaur about fifty million times in the first few pages) who finds his mate in Robert, a bear shifter and how even a relationship that was destined to be, still requires communication and compromise to work.
Personally, Vy was pretty hard for me to like for more than half the book. Vy is so screechy (get it - he's a hawk!) with his key phrase so constant that I have actually suffered
He was awful. AWFUL. He started out bad and got worse. He was arrogant, melodramatic, irritating, immature!
5 stars for Greg's narration!

I AM THE KUAR!!

Any additional comments?

Basically this boils down to a typical Cardeno C "I want to take care of you!" hero (Robert) and a not-so-typical Calmes "I've got baggage and drama" character ("Vy").

Personally, Vy was pretty hard for me to like for more than half the book. Vy is so screechy (get it - he's a hawk!) with his key phrase so constant that I have actually suffered a kind of PTSD where I literally cannot see this title, or read someone's review, without screeching out loud (no matter where I am) "I AM THE KUAR!" It actually makes for some pretty funny public situations to be honest.

I found the story to be okay, once I was finally able to get into it, but it wasn't on my auto-rotation of re-reads. However, when I found out Greg Tremblay was featured on the audio book I decided ay to give this another go, mainly because of Tremblay's fantastic job making me love Rhys Ford's "Cole McGinnis" series, which I has a hard time relating to in print form.

And guess what, folks? Greg Tremblay does it again!

Vy is still a little hard to take until towards the end, but I loved Robert so, so much it made it all worth it!

5 stars for Greg's narration!

Perfect audio adaptation of a great book

There is a reason Greg Tremblay is one of my top narrators - both Vy and Robert came across as completely independent people with different personalities and this was maintained both in their own POV and also when appearing in the other MC POV. A great story with a depth to each character that helps you live what they are living, not just listen to it.

Wonderful.

I loved this story. How Vi becomes so much more with Robert at his side, and how Robert makes peace with his other half. Greg Tremblay always brings the words to glorious life.

Wooing with the patience of a saint.

This is a rather sweet story about a Halk Shifter Leader with a deep seeded need to prove that he is a good and strong leader, but inwardly is desperate for a mate's loving. And then along comes his perfect match, only to find out that what you need is hard to accept after simply just getting what you want.
Read by my very favourite author and he hasn't disappointed me! He is simply the best!
I can see myself in Vy, and i hope that my Robert is as patient is his... Really...

Perfect shifter MM romance

Another wonderful book! Brilliant MCs and some sharply drawn supporting charters make this sensitive, funny, emotional book well worth a read/listen. The wonderful Greg Tremblay does such a great job. Perfect.
