Publisher's summary

In this thrilling epic of the American West, New York Times best-selling authors William W. Johnstone and J. A. Johnstone capture the human side of the frontier experience in all its glory, grit, and grandeur - through the eyes of one remarkable teenage boy.

Leaving their Pennsylvania home to forge a new life in the untamed Oregon Territory of 1845, the Colter family is ambushed by a kill-crazy gang of cutthroats on the Oregon Trail. Fifteen-year-old Tim Colter manages to escape and hide - only to return and find his parents butchered, his sisters Nancy and Margaret missing, and one last killer waiting for his return.

Forced to fight for his life, the young Colter embarks on a perilous journey across a lawless frontier, hoping to save his sisters and salvage the dream they lived for. But first Tim has to figure out how to survive. Luckily he finds a new friend in Jed Reno, a grizzled one-eyed trapper who has lived in the Rocky Mountains since the 1820s - and who was attacked by the same gang that ambushed Tim's family.

Together the mountain man and the greenhorn set out after the marauders, blazing a trail of vengeance that leads them to one of the deadliest men in the territory. With danger at every turn and death just a heartbeat away, Colter has no choice but to grow up fast - one bullet at a time.

Great story but McLain...

The story is great and the reading is good. But the man's name is Bridger not Briget. Jim Bridger wasn't French!

Enjoyed this.

Became a fan of the characters and enjoyed listening. The outcome wasn't easily predictable so that's good writing.

The ending tying into the beginning

Storie was good, the reading was great except for the John Wayne voice for Reno’s character

The narrator dose a 4 plus job HOWEVER

The production value is low. The sound level changes so much that you will loose some dialogue.

The story is good but not complete.

Historical fiction

Pretty good story, I’m not personally into historical fiction too much but if you are this should be enjoyable.

Excellent Western Novel

I often know if I am going to like a book by the description of the book and this book is no exception. I enjoyed every aspect of this story!

Now for the reading. John McLain does a great job, and John Wayne would be proud of Mr McLain’s Ability to imitate his voice.

I loved this book,

Story was excellent, made me pine for a bygone time, something people today have no idea of. Even though it is a fiction it resonated with me as a possibility.

The narrator is brilliant, I am no longer able to read myself but the tallent in this narration made me think I would have listened even if I could have read it myself.

Top notch to all concerned

Good story wit imagination

As someone who is familiar with this life and the country, the story was a little slow and too much detail, but invigorates the reader when the journey begins but if your looking for geographical flow it’s it close. The story and language is good.
