Publisher's Summary

In the small Irish town of Knockglen, best friends Bernadette ('Benny') and Eve are inseparable. Benny is an adored only child, and Eve a poor, birdlike orphan brought up by nuns.

On their first day at University College, Dublin, a fatal road accident brings the pair together with fellow students Nan Mahon and Jack Foley, and new friendships are quickly struck. Jack and Nan introduce Eve and Benny to a life of excitement and sophistication. But beneath their carefree existence, trouble is brewing for the circle of friends.

Warmth and laughter are interwoven with sadness in this compassionate and absorbing tale of friends whose lives, over a period of ten years, become entwined.

Up there with the classics

I love this story. It has to be my favourite Binchy novel. The narration is wonderful - totally engaging. I don't need to say anymore about it. It's brilliant!

An easy listen

Would you listen to Circle of Friends again? Why?

Its a very easy book to listen too. not to complicated a storyline, easy to follow.

Any additional comments?

I would have enjoyed the book to have ended differently, I felt like the ends of the stories didn't really tie up nicely, I was very surprised when I realised it was actually the end of the book and not just the end of a chapter.

A fabulous holiday listen

Kate Binchey's narration never fails she has a wonderful knack of bringing the characters to life and making them very believeable. Whilst the storyline is fairly light it manages to hold the listeners attention to the very end.

Complete Circle - Binchy satisfies on all counts

Maeve Binchy has done it again, this is one of her better books and the audio version helps bring to life those characters who spring off the page - cosseted and somewhat suffocated Benny, in love with the faithless handsome Jack; Eve her best friend, ever staunch and reliable; naughty Nan - whose beauty captures the eye but not the heart. You can almost imagine the awful Sean, wringing his hands in 'Uriah Heep' fashion, such is Kate Binchy's excellent narration which brings this circle of friends (and foes) to life. A feelgood tale which yet portrays some of the trials and tribulations of young people growing up in less permissive times, with a satisfying and somewhat surprising conclusion.

A truly beautiful story

The story charts the early blossoms of life from youth to teenage trials and tribulations of Benny. It is truly a beautiful and heart wendering story that simply touches you and one that I would definitely recommend. The reader takes you on Benny's journey with Eve, her best friend and Jack, the love of her life! I can and have listened to this story over and over again, a great purchase.

Just brilliant! Warm, witty and touching

I'd never read or listened to any of Maeve Binchy's books before, and within ten minutes of starting to listen I knew I would adore her writing, and was kicking myself for not giving her a try sooner!

Circle of Friends was a fantastic book to start off with, a lovely warm story of friendships, small town life and teenage rights of passage. The friendship between characters Benny and Eve was so true to life and genuine, and the narrator is very talented at voicing the entire cast of characters vividly.

I couldn't be more gushing with praise for Circle of Friends! If you're looking to immerse yourself in a warm friendly world with great characters you'll find yourself rooting for, and a story that doesn't skimp on drama and emotion, then look no further.

Impossible not to love this book! I can't wait to start another Maeve Binchy.

Circle of Friends

Many years since I have read a Maeve Binchy book. As I was unwell an audio book was perfect for me. The style of the book was also perfect and I enjoyed it very much. I will certainly choose another title very soon. The story was convincing and the people in it also.

Good read/listen

I enjoyed the characters. although I found the transitions back and forth between them a bit irritating. I felt the story did go on a little long and could probably have finished a third earlier. The narrator was perfect, very easy to listen to and told the story well. This is my first Maeve Binchy book and probably won't be my last.
