Publisher's summary

Private Investigator Nick Nowak is back in two novella length mysteries set in Chicago during the early 1980s. In Little Boy Boom, Nick's car explodes when a thief attempts to steal it. Realizing the bomb was meant for him, Nick sets out to discover who wants him dead only to find that the list of possible suspects is longer than he'd like. When he begins to run out of suspects he wonders if the bomb was truly meant for him.

In Little Boy Tenor, Nick is asked to find the murderer of a church choir's star tenor, while at the same time his friend Ross asks him to find out the truth behind his lover, Earl Silver's mysterious death. As he juggles the two cases, he becomes increasingly disturbed by what he learns.

Triggering, quaint story

4 Blue Roses
4.5 Blue Flames
Narrator Brad Langer dryly delivered the Nick Nowak Mysteries series. His emotionless monotonous narration is as old skool as the plot itself, which for some reason drew me deeper into the life of the most sexually active private investigator; Nick Nowak.

The cases he investigates are kind of intriguing. The longer I listened, the more I wanted to hear. The plot time is depicted in the 1980s. It’s the time of no lube or condoms, only spit, and if you are lucky maybe vaseline. Venereal diseases and GRIDS, or gay-related immunodeficiency syndrome, is just being noticed. Nick, is a dude who has a lot of sex. If it’s male and willing, he is fucking it. I’m not judging, good for him, the more sex the better, but unfortunately in hindsight, we know what happens with HIV. Each time Nick is having sex, I see more and more men getting infected. That left me conflicted between listening and enjoying hot sex scenes.

The victimization of gay men is vividly described, the book conveys a silent internal truthfulness, a very lifelikeness of being gay in the 1980″s, and the reality or consistency of the sad world these characters lived within.

I do recommend this series. It’s one of those, you would miss if you don’t experience it.

A MAN OF MANY TALENTS AND LOVERS

I received this audio book for free and am giving my honest and voluntary review

This is a compilation of two stories about Nick Nowak, a former policeman turned private investigator. Nick is a very promiscuous person who gets involved in all types of illegal activities. He takes on jobs and find out the answers to them although it is in a roundabout way. He makes for interesting reads. The story takes place when AIDS is beginning to show up in the 1980s.

The narration is good and the narrator keeps the story flowing smoothly.

Addicted to this series

I’m not sure I know where to start on these stories. As usual the mysteries are really good. Yet it seems that in these stories Nick is at a place in his personal life that drew my attention probably as much as solving the mysteries. Nick is at a crossroads. He has a few opportunities to choose which way his life is going to go. Daniel enters back into Nick’s life and at the same time he has Harker to make decisions about. Harker’s mom plays just enough a part to make me shake my head and sometimes just laugh. Nick has not slowed down on his sexual activities. I love this series. I read a lot of different books and I’m not sure what actually draws me to these stories yet I can’t set them aside. Maybe it’s just the mysteries and Nick’s personal life makes me feel that these are not at all the run of the mill. Brad Langer again brings these stories to life.

Some sad truths

I like how the author quickly recapps situations/relationships so anyone can read and not be lost! I found it very telling when Nick went to Ross's house after the Earl part. Nick was a good friend. I liked the relationship between Nick and Owen. They used each othet and it worked. I'm really enjoying Nick's sleuth skills. I didn't see that last one coming!! Nick's personal life is a huge hot mess. Things are looking dire. The narrator's voice and expressions greatly added to my enjoyment of this story. I voluntarily listened to a free copy of this story and am giving an honest review.
