Publisher's Summary

Paul Gallo saw the report on the news: a mass murderer leading police to his victims' graves in remote Dread's Hand, Alaska.

It's not even a town; more like the bad memory of a town. The same bit of wilderness where his twin brother went missing a year ago. As the bodies are exhumed, Paul travels to Alaska to get closure and put his grief to rest.

But the mystery is only beginning. What Paul finds are superstitious locals who talk of the devil stealing souls, and a line of wooden crosses to keep what's in the woods from coming out. He finds no closure because no one can explain exactly what happened to Danny.

And the more he searches for answers, the more he finds himself becoming part of the mystery...

"An elegant, twisted, gripping slow-burn of a novel that burrows under the skin and nestles deep.” (RT Book Reviews, Top Pick)

Best part of the book was a mini background story

There was a story near the end that was creepier than the rest of the book. I wanted more of that story than what I got in the book. The writer is good and I will look for more of their work based solely on the mini background story near the end. I wished I got a better pay-off than what we got. The narrator was amazing although I was hesitant at first, Charles Constant proved me wrong.

Excellent! Atmospheric and creepy.

"They're all dead now. I killed them."

An excellent work of dark fiction from Mr. Malfi. You can feel the chill of this one in your bones. Atmospheric and creepy.

Vague and anti-climactic

It was hard to keep my mind from wandering throughout the entirety of the story and in the end it just sort of fizzled out. Vague and unsatisfying.

bone white crazy

beautiful, haunting and heartbreaking. Ronald Malfi did a great job with the relationship between Paul and Danny, or lack there of. I have sisters so I could relate to Paul very much. I thought he acted like anyone would if their sibling was missing. the story is really good. very much "this is how we've always done it and that's how it is." I liked that very much. I highly recommend this book.

Lasting, creepy images

The book begins a little slowly but after the first two chapters I couldn't stop listening. I do not generally find myself creeped out but holy moly the author does such a great job of it that I can't look at the woods without my stomach turning!

The reader did a great job, but the women author than Jill's voices were nails on chalkboard.

Very Good!

This book was really gripping. I have to say that I really hated the townspeople. Not only were they weird, they were really rude. The book does explain why they acted that way but they still just annoyed me. I felt sorry for Paul throughout the entire book. He really went through a lot looking for his brother. The ending was good too.

Not what I expected

I didn't particularly care for any of the characters but I thought the story was good and all of my initial assumptions ended up being wrong. I thought the close of the book came a little quickly and I wish it had ended differently but over all the story made me think and it kept me interested.

Slow read. Not much to story.

Really slow read. Frankly seemed lots of rambling without any point. I finished it and thought is that all there is to the story.

Better than Night Parade!

This book was much better than Night Parade! Storyline and content plus character building. All around just a better book. Actually a cut above several that I’ve read in awhile. The tension and suspense was enjoyable and the outdoor setting and soooky type atmosphere surrounding the town and people were well done. Could have been a bit longer and more in depth in some ways and the ending had me wondering a bit if I had missed something but overall this was a pretty decent read. Honestly not worth the four stars I gave it but I’m compared to a lot of the more recent crap I’ve been reading I had to go ahead and slide a four in there.
Show me more books as close to that setting as I can and I’ll read them all!
