Editorial reviews

Barbara Edelman delivers a sensuous performance of the romance Blazing Embersby prolific novelist Deborah Camp. In the Wild West, Cassie Potter is devastated when her father is murdered. There is no one left in the world to protect her. When the handsome Rook Colton collapses on her doorstep, with a bullet in his back, fear and desire course through her body. He lusts after her, and she’s powerless to resist him despite knowing nothing of his past. Can Rook be trusted? Will his secrets tear them apart and forever destroy Cassie’s fragile world?

Publisher's summary

In a West run by outlaws, Cassie Potter's father is brutally murdered and she can afford to trust no one. Even the handsome stranger collapsed on her doorstep could be dangerous-despite the bullet in his back-a fact that makes her shudder even as the sight of him makes her heart race. As Rook Colton's strength and lust return, Cassie is helpless against the power of her own desire. When he takes her hungrily in his arms, warm lips trailing down her neck, her shoulders...she can no longer suppress the blazing flames within her. Forgotten is the "Wanted" poster that bares a strong resemblance to Rook-a lapse that could mean the end of all Cassie's carefully protected since her father's death.

the worst book yet!

I was in such a bad mood by chapter 4 I had to give my ears and brain a rest. the narration was horrible. it was like a really bad version of The Beverly hillbillies. really really bad version. the story was bad and the voice of Cassie was like nails on a chalk board.

Be prepared for unconventional heroine

The low ratings of this book is probably all due to unconventional heroine, who is very hard to warm up to; she is uneducated, rough spoken daughter of the dirt farmer, she is a shrew, constantly swearing, shrieking and has not tender feelings for anyone but her Pa. it was hard to see her as the romantic heroine at the beginning of the book but as the story progressed Cassandra grows up and starts to make slow steps to changing into a resemblance of a lady.
On the positive, I found her character totally authentic to the time period and to her upbringing, she was strong, resilient and very self reliant.
Overall, I really enjoyed this western romance, it’s well written and I didn’t want to stop listening until the end.
I will definitely listen to more books by Deborah Camp 🌟

Hilarious

from the start of this story I have been LOL not sure where the story was going Cassie Potter father died the same day Rook Colton came riding in hurt and when the story become slow and repetitive Cassie is so country it becomes so annoying Rook is just simply and patient boy the languages they use are terrible the story has no substance I wanted to stop so many times but I continued because the narrator voices are so funny I listening and laugh

Narration was a distraction.

Would you try another book from Deborah Camp and/or Barbara Edelman?

I have read a few of Camp's books & they were good, and this one may be have better if I wasn't so put off by the narration.

Would you be willing to try another one of Barbara Edelman’s performances?

No. Her different voices were not good, the primary character came across childish instead of unschooled/unpolished as I believe the author intended. And the men's voices were just bad.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Story may be good in traditional book form.
