Editorial reviews

Editors Select, May 2013 - When it’s been six years since a best-selling author’s last book, there is a heightened sense of anticipation and high expectations surrounding that next new release. And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini is the perfect example of this, and does not disappoint. An expansive family saga, both modern and mythic, the story begins in a small Afghan town in the 1950s and follows one family through time and across the globe to France, California, and Greece. While there is a broad sweeping sense of the effect of one generation on the next, it’s the personal relationships between siblings that I found the most memorable; in particular how Abdullah, a 10-year-old boy, becomes the caretaker to his three-year-old sister, Pari, and does so with love, skill, and absolutely no hesitation or resentment. Their forced separation is the catalyst that creates the conflict and momentum that propels the story beyond Afghanistan and into the larger world. I look forward to the audio (including the author’s narration) and then to Hosseini’s next book, regardless of when that may be. Tricia, Audible Editor

Publisher's summary

On May 21, 2013, the new novel from Khaled Hosseini: an unforgettable story about finding a lost piece of yourself in someone else.

Khaled Hosseini, the number-one New York Times best-selling author of The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, has written a new novel about how we love, how we take care of one another, and how the choices we make resonate through generations. In this tale revolving around not just parents and children but brothers and sisters, cousins and caretakers, Hosseini explores the many ways in which families nurture, wound, betray, honor, and sacrifice for one another; and how often we are surprised by the actions of those closest to us, at the times that matter most. Following its characters and the ramifications of their lives and choices and loves around the globe—from Kabul to Paris to San Francisco to the Greek island of Tinos—the story expands gradually outward, becoming more emotionally complex and powerful with each passing minute.

Tender and Moving

Our lives are entwined in ways we don't always expect. We all touch each other. This is the story of And the Mountains Echoed. It is a universal theme told masterfully in each chapter. The narration is well-done and adds to the feel of the story.

My third bood to listen to by this author

This author takes you on a journey of the human mind, he uses the Middle East as his back drop. This time it is outsiders of the country as well as the insiders who are participants of this story. Of people who escape to Europe, of the bonds to the East. I love listening to this author, so well narrated. So much can be learned of lives of people who spend much time together, of times changing, of picking up the pieces. It is a book that, as the others, takes you away and immerses you from day to day life. Well worth the listen.

Beautiful

beautifully painted with vivid smells, colours and love. Cleverly woven stories, knitting together towards the end. Enhanced by the authors reading.

Not As Good As First Two Books

After reading the first two books, I expected this one to be as spectacular. It was very disappointing for that reason. The story was long, drawn out, a bit confusing, and not very compelling. The narration was hard to understand because of the accent of the narrator. I may get the written work to see what I could not understand with the narration.

Full of love and feeling

I liked how the characters branched out and the way things were sorted.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in differing cultures.

This will be one of my forever favorites as I found it totally engaging, made me smile, cry, think.

Heartbreaking and beautiful

Khaled so artfully describes inward emotions and fully flleshes out his characters. They are so real you can almost touch them. I did have a hard time following some of the stories when the chronogical timeline skipped around. The last chapter hit me so hard I was a wreck for the rest of the day, having recently been through a family members struggle with dementia. This author has a gift for hitting you in the feels.

This book will haunt you....

I got this book because I I love and respect Hosseini's works. Like his other books, this book takes the reader on deeply wonderful journey of complex characters with poignant stories that stays with the reader for a long time. I had to listen to the book a second time to fill in some of what I missed the first time. Hosseini's characters are always well fleshed out and the details in his stories are so intricately textured. This book underscores how as human beings we make decisions because in the moment we feel these decisions are the best given the circumstances. Many times, however, these decisions change the courses of lives and even those of subsequent generations. The narrators did not detract from the story for me. Rather, they gave the story more credibility and their voices seemed "right to me." This author has me for life! If he scribbles on a paper napkin I will be reading it! If you like Hosseini's other books you may love this even more! Go ahead and get it, I promise this one will haunt your soul.

Fabulous Book but Not Hosseini's Best

Would you listen to And the Mountains Echoed again? Why?

I really enjoyed listening to this book. I couldn't figure out how the book was going flow--until after the first two hours. But then I couldn't stop listening to it. Granted, parts of it were more enthralling than others, but, overall, I really enjoyed listening to the book and found the audible format very enjoyable.

What did you like best about this story?

Hosseini does a great job teaching the reader about Afghanistan's history and especially, how the country's history has affected people differently. In the book, we see common parts of the same story relived through the eyes of many different characters. The lives of each of the characters intersects in a brilliant and not contrived way.

Which scene was your favorite?

I loved hearing Nabi's story. When the author introduces Nabi, he can hardly be seen as a sympathetic character. However, seeing Nabi's full life unfold and Nabi mature throughout brings out the story of a very complex, but yet thoughtful, character.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The relationship between Nabi and Suleman moved me greatly. The two had a special relationship wherein they both gave each other everything they could in a way that they could continue to co-exist. Their love for each other touched me more than more traditional love stories.

Any additional comments?

Clearly, Hosseini is a brilliant storyteller. And he tells his stories against the background of a country--Afghanistan--in which few write about or personally know. While I really enjoyed this book, I can't say it was my favorite of Hosseini's. However, I view this book as one of the best books ever written and the audible version is extremely well done. Even one who doesn't normally listen or like audiobooks won't regret listening to this one.

Loved it

Beautifully written and an addicting story line. Now one of my favorites. Beautiful homage to inter generational connections and middle eastern culture.

So fascinating, yet hard to get

If you could sum up And the Mountains Echoed in three words, what would they be?

Fantastic emotional storytelling

What other book might you compare And the Mountains Echoed to and why?

All the authors other books.

What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Great emotional voices that makes the story get very much alive.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Nor laugh nor cry, but it certainly has the potential to bring up emotions of many kinds. It touched me very much.

Any additional comments?

As with the authors other books, I had a hard time figuring out the identity of everybody, because the story jumps in time and place. I struggled a lot with who-is-who and what were their names. At these points I would have liked to page back in a physical book to brush up on names.
