Publisher's summary

Hugh Walpole (1884-1941) was one of the most popular and prolific English authors of his time, best known for his historical fiction and novels for boys. But it was in the field of the macabre and supernatural that Walpole was at his best, and this collection of 16 tales contains many of his finest, including the classic werewolf story "Tarnhelm"; the oft-anthologized "The Little Ghost"; "The Snow", a chilling story of vengeance from beyond the grave; and perhaps the highlight of the collection, "The Silver Mask", which one critic has called "a masterpiece, a classic example of how a tale can be truly terrible and ghostly with no ghost and only the wispiest hint of the supernatural."

Critic reviews

"There are sixteen stories in Walpole's collection, and they all reach a high degree of merit; all are marked by the distinguished literary quality one is sure to find in his work." ( New York Times)

Ghost stories well told

Any additional comments?

If my grandparents told ghost stories I think they would have been much like these. From 1933 these stories hold up today. Not over the top or ultraviolent. Very good collection of woo woo tales. I was voluntarily provided this review copy audiobook at no charge by the author, narrator, and/or publisher.

Highly Recommended!

Would you consider the audio edition of All Souls' Night to be better than the print version?

I believe the narration enhanced the novel.

What other book might you compare All Souls' Night to and why?

I would recommend All Soul's Night to fans of the ghost stories of M.R. James, because the tales had that ghostly feel to them, even though they were not all ghost stories.

Which scene was your favorite?

My favorite story in this book was The Staircase because it had a unique POV.

If you could rename All Souls' Night, what would you call it?

Great Stories of Old.

Excellent Collection for Fans of The Twilight Zone

Any additional comments?

I love old fashioned ghost stories. As such, I jumped at the chance to listen to All Souls' Night, which is a collection of 16 short stories first published by Sir Hugh Walpole in 1933. While not every story included ghosts, there were plenty that kept me eerily entertained because, let's be honest, some people's actions toward others is ghastly.

My three favorite stories were "Sentimental But True" where a mysterious dog befriends a lonely middle aged woman who truly needs a friend. "The Staircase" where a house has feelings and despises one of its owners. And "Portrait in Shadow" where a cultured wealthy man befriends a young traveler who is invited to stay a few nights in his villa. The traveler is shown a painting that is a few hundred years old but looks a lot like his host. Depending on the lighting on this portrait, the ancestor depicted becomes sinister, like the volatile moods of the host (this story reminded me of Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray).

I listened to the Audible version of this collection narrated by Matt Godfrey who did an admirable job. He has great pace and differentiated between male and female characters. I received a free copy of this audio and freely leave this unbiased review. In summary, I highly recommend this audiobook to anyone who enjoys watching old episodes of the Twilight Zone.

Bizarre and Enjoyable

Any additional comments?

This collection of stories is certainly different from any collection I've listened to before. Some of the stories have a spooky element to them, some seemed to be pure drama and others, well, I wouldn't know what to categorize some of these stories! I thoroughly enjoyed all of the stories, though I will say that some of them completely lacked an ending. Usually this bothers me a lot, but these stories were so odd that I kind of bought the non-endings as well! I would recommend this book to readers who like something older, something quirky or just like to try new and weird things!

An Highly Enjoyable Title

All Soul's Night is an entertaining set of tales that I genuinely found creepy and fun to listen to with the lights low and a piece of knitting in my hands. They had that old-fashioned ghostly feel that you remember from your younger years listening to scary stories when they thrilled you by getting under your skin and making you check under the bed before you went to sleep.
