It is mid-19th century Scotland, and the weaving industry is booming. Thanks to the patronage of young Queen Victoria and her consort, all things tartan are the height of fashion. One day, beneath the dripping trees in the grounds of Balmoral Castle, young Jenny Corvill steals towards the Royal Household. Cradled in her arms is a parcel of cloth she knows will impress the royal couple and establish her father's wares in the forefront of the weaving industry.
But many pitfalls lie ahead for this independent young woman: the first is in the form of the prince's equerry, the charming Captain Bobby Prentiss.
