Publisher's summary

Nilda Carlson has been trying to save enough money to go to America for months, so when a letter arrives with an offer to pay her passage, she jumps at the chance. Her younger brother, Ivar, accompanies her, and they are thrilled to join older brother Rune and his family in the northern forests of Minnesota. But America is not everything Nilda imagined. A terrifying experience in a lumber camp shakes Nilda's confidence and trust in men, but a job helping a young widow raise her children and run her farm gives her a chance to build her own life.

When she meets Fritz, the children's schoolteacher, she is initially unimpressed and uninterested. His kindness and passion for learning begin to win her over, but how can she sacrifice her dreams for the future for a man she's still not sure of?

Norwegian settlers

This story focuses on a family from Norway who came to America to realize a dream of owning land and settled in Minnesota. I have loved all of Lauraine Snelling’s books, especially the series set near the Red River of North Dakota. That series, as this one, is centered around a Norwegian settlement. I love their focus on hard work, family, and faith!

Characterizations incomplete

Although I am mostly enjoying this series & have truly enjoyed Snelling's "Red River of the North" series, the one thing that is really irritating about THIS series is that we never get to understand any backstory about nasty, verbally abusive Einar! I have been waiting to hear more about him but we never do! Was he always this way? If so, why did Gerd marry him? What is it that motivates him to be so mean despite being treated so kindly by everyone else! The author leaves Einar without any dimensionality!

Interesting

Snelling is one of the best authors for word pictures. The descriptions are so vivid that you can see and feel (and smell) every minute of the book.

Great Stories

I have listened to all of these books. And as I found a new one I was so excited to start. You must listen to all four of them!

Meh...

Just about everyone from the start were angry & petulant. Maybe it was the narrator? It was difficult to get through. Not the LS series I am used to.

Heartwarming story of struggles of coming to America, and the importance of family and Faith.

I enjoyed the fact that the characters in this novel have a distant relationship with those of the Red River north series.

Please Narrator

This story is okay. Immigrants from Norway creating their American dream. I’m to Chapter 11 and want to scream every time the son name Leif is pronounced as “leaf” on a tree. I expect the Norwegian name spelled Leif would be pronounced as “lay f”. Sorry I’m not a grammar expert, but this name pronunciation is driving me crazy. Hopefully I’ll finish the book. Argh!

A Breath of Hope

This was quite different, but very entertaining. Even shed some tears along with the smiles. The ending was a surprise and this was a continuing of some families from Book 1. Now on to the next.
Starting my repeat, second review.

I have listened to this series a second time. I loved it so much and was so amazed that there was so much that I needed to know. This family is now of my own, could not help it as her writing of all that has gone on, bringing us right into the picture. Could not help this as learning so much of the people of Norway and then here in America.

Do not miss this whole series, Book 3 is "A Season of Grace" and then Book 4 "A Song of Joy."
