Where have all the old gods gone? What happens when new gods start hatching?

In a world where gods once lived among humans, the Skalven people are starving. The Crown is convinced the gods are to blame for the misfortunes of the entire kingdom. Prince Landis Larsen is sent into the tribal lands to retrieve a mythical dragon egg so the Skalve can wage war with the gods when they are forced to return for their treasure.

Landis fails. Reeling from a rogue wave and harried by his treasonous army, Landis is forced to form an unlikely alliance with Meara, the tribal girl entrusted with the dragon egg’s protection. When the dragon egg hatches, it unveils a world where gods and humans are intertwined. Loyalties are challenged and destinies reshape on a journey to unite new gods with the old and save the natural landscape from destruction by its own people.

I very much enjoyed this story. It felt like it could have used another go around, especially on the conversations which felt a bit underwhelming for an adult fantasy.
If you enjoy dragon tales and have a few hours, this was a good use of my time. Definitely pick it up if you’re looking at it and it’s on sale.
As this is an early book for the author, I will be interested in seeing how their writing evolves over time.

This story pulls you into a kingdom on the brink, where a desperate prince is sent to steal a dragon egg so his people can challenge the very gods they blame for their suffering. When his mission collapses, he’s forced into an uneasy partnership with the very girl sworn to protect the egg, and what hatches changes everything they thought they knew about gods, loyalty, and destiny. It becomes a sweeping journey of unlikely alliances, shifting truths, and a fight not just for survival, but for the balance between humans, gods, and the world they share.

The author, Jennifer Abrahamsen, demonstrates a clear talent for crafting an imaginative and layered story, with environmental themes woven strongly throughout the narrative. At times, that message feels a bit overemphasized—particularly in the repeated contrasts between opposing factions—but it’s evident that the writer is passionate about the ideas being explored. One of the author’s greatest strengths is dialogue; the exchanges are lively, clever, and often genuinely witty, giving the characters distinct voices and keeping the story engaging. The shifting points of view are handled skillfully, allowing each character to shape the flow of the narrative while showcasing thoughtful character development. Most impressive is the author’s ability to balance depth with entertainment, especially in the playful and memorable interactions between dragons and humans, which highlight both creativity and storytelling confidence.

The narrator, Elena A. Steele, delivers a solid, engaging performance that truly enhances the listening experience. She gives each character a distinct sound, which makes it easy to follow who’s speaking and adds personality without ever feeling exaggerated. Her cadence is steady and confident, and I appreciated how smoothly she handled shifts in perspective—there’s a natural flow that keeps the story cohesive and easy to stay immersed in. She speaks clearly, with a delivery that brings the characters vividly to life and adds depth to their emotions and interactions. Her narration shows both strong technical skill and a storyteller’s touch, making this a performance that supports and elevates the book rather than simply reading it.

Overall, this was an interesting and engaging audiobook.
