Publisher's Summary

Wayne Gamm was born on a remote sheep farm on a mountainside in north Wales on a stormy night in June. The midwife and even the family itself wanted him to be delivered in hospital because he was going to be large and he was Gwynedd's first baby, but for reasons that will become apparent, his mother and grandmother, Rhiannon, thought that might be very dangerous.

All of Gwynedd's family had been born on the farm, Yr Ardd Y Ddraig, The Dragon's Garden, for as far back as they knew - a family Bible put that at 324 years - and they were all either witches or warlocks.

The problem with the males, though, was that they were "loose cannons", meaning they had difficulty focusing their powers. Wayne followed suit, although all witch babies have to learn self-control, even the females.

Gwynedd and Rhiannon had high hopes that Wayne would be more capable than his male antecedents, but it turned out that he had such great power, and so little control, that even his own family were wary of him.

He was feared and shunned at school by teachers and fellow students alike because they knew from experience that things could get a little weird when Wayne was around.

The more astute noticed that when he was happy, good things happened, but when he was upset, anything could befall anyone. Luckily, Wayne was a happy person by nature, but this made it worse for him, because he didn't want to hurt people, so he refused to accept that he was causing the disruptions.

They called him Fate Twister behind his back.

Wayne grew up dejected, rejected, lonely, and in denial.

This is the story of the early life of Wayne Gamm, Fate Twister.

Fate Twister

This may have been a decent story, but I couldn't keep my attanetion on it long enough. The narration was terrible. It was hard to hear, sounded like it was done on a 70's cassette recorder and Mr Murphy while sounding posh, stumbled over words.I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.'

Story -Not a solid 4/5 but nearly

This is the first book I have read/listened to by this author. Based on the publisher’s synopsis, I expected more of a conflict or ominous events with Wayne and his powers, especially when it eludes to even his parents being wary of him. This is not really the case. The events are quite tame and the story goes in a direction I would never have guessed from the beginning. I like the more positive way of dealing with his powers. I feel overall it was a good story, but I did not feel completely satisfied once I got to the end. It ends quite abruptly.

I listen to a lot of audiobooks. This is the first book I have listened to by this narrator ( Pauli Murphy ). There were several issues. He definitely reads, not performs this book. The character voices are not distinct, his cadence does not vary, and he does not add much expression into his reading. His narration was mediocre.
The audio quality is very poor. The volume output varies throughout the book, which makes listening even more uncomfortable. The overall volume output is so low I had to increase the volume on my player by double to get the same listening volume I typically use. Then I had to lower it for the times his output level increased because it would blast my ears.
My listening volume was also effected by his muffled narration. There is a lot of static and it sounds like he’s speaking at a distance through a tube, His narration was muffled by the competition of the static. However, even this varied, sometimes his voice was a bit clearer like he was speaking closer and the output volume would be louder and I’d have to adjust again.
The one plus.. he has a wonderful singing voice.

There are no explicit sex scenes, excessive violence or swearing.

Audio quality and narration need a lot of work

To start, the audio quality for this was quite bad. Poor audio equipment, and sloppy editing resulted in hearing small amounts of static in the background, a lot of echo, and inconsistencies between chapters, especially during the announcement of each chapter name. Despite how noticeable those things were, overall they were only a minor annoyance. What made it much worse was that the narrator had virtually no range between characters making it difficult at times to tell who was speaking. The two of these things combined made me feel like I would have rather read the book than listened to it.

Getting past the narration, the plot was actually pretty good and well written. However I felt like the story didn't really match up well throughout the story. The first several chapters describe Wayne from birth to early teens, and gave the sense that terrible out of control events were likely to occur later on his life and the book. However, nearly the half of the story goes past before his ability to twist fate is even mentioned again. And then for the rest of the book nothing bad actually ever happens. That being said, I actually did like how the story turned out and how it developed, but it felt inconsistent with how the story began. For over half of the book, I kept waiting and wondering when something dramatic or some crazy twist of fate was going to happen. Aside from that, the ending of the book also felt really off. Two of the characters do something really unexpected, and then very abruptly the book just ends. There was no cliffhanger, or anything setting it up for a sequel. It felt like there easily could have been a neater way of wrapping everything up in just one or two more paragraphs, but then "THE END" just came out of nowhere.

Overall, I did enjoy the majority of the story. But between the audio issues, and plot line inconsistencies, it felt like this could have used some professional editing and sound recording.

Wishing

When requesting this audio I had high expectations.
The story was intriguing, yet I had a hard time hearing the narrator. As if he was far off speaking in another room. This made it difficult to follow the story. I lost interest in completing it. Not due to the story, nor narrator, but to the production of it.
This audio was given to me free and I voluntarily gave this review.

Just not for me

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

It's a good story and very well written. It just didn't grab me personally. The style, especially the first portion of the book, is like a parent is telling you a lovely and long story. I didn't feel in it with the characters, but like I was young again with my nan telling me a tale. That is lovely in its own way, I just found that perspective to go on to long for me. I stopped wanting to be told what Wayne was like and wanted to see and feel it for myself via dialogue and action. But I think this could really be a story other folks love for that same perspective that I shied away from. Like I said in the beginning: it is well written with a good story. It also has kind and relatable characters, interesting magic and magical influence, and a great narrator. I loved his performance and voice which certainly is also a part of why it felt like a beloved parent was telling me the story. The audio quality isn't great though- it sounds like he's narrating from inside his home office, which I'm sure he isn't, but it did slightly detract from the audiobook for me. Still, I think a lot of folks may like this book and that it was just my personal preferences that caused the three stars here, so listen to a sample and see what you think!

Good story

This book is pretty decent but I the synopsis is a little deceiving. The book I does not contain many paranormal events it just tells a story that to me is not well developed and neither are the characters. It starts off excellent but to me quickly goes downhill. The narration is horrid it sometimes sounds like the narrator is in a closet. I received this book for free and this is my honest review.
