Story
Before the Fall, Obsidian Corporation had Agents, and Teledyne Industries had Specialists. Both were deadly. In the Northeast Sector of North America, deep in Obsidian-controlled territory, Teledyne had Mr. Smith, and people fled, just on the rumor he was close by. Now, 20 years after the fall, former Obsidian executives have formed a tenuous truce with the former assassin to save New Toronto. Smith would have happily lived out his life alone, but when Smith sees that something needs doing, he gets it done.

It was just a random mutation - one of a billion that happen in viruses every day. But this one was different. It exploded out of Somalia and spread across the oceans before anybody thought to look up from their cell phones to see what was going on. The infected breathed the virus into the air around them, spreading it through the cities faster than anyone thought possible. Hospitals were overwhelmed. Police lines crumbled. Quarantine sites disintegrated. Cities started to collapse.

Story
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

Every candidate must pass a commissioning mission in order to graduate, though, and Hr'ent's is unsolvable. The Pushtal of Vorrhurna were once one of the Mercenary Guild's 37 races.

Publisher's Summary
What do you do when the world falls?
For Zebediah Pratt - or “Zee” to his friends - the answer is easy; he goes back to the family farm to support his father. By pooling resources with their neighbors in the countryside, they’re able to stand up to the lone gunmen who are on the lookout for easy prey in a world where the rule of law no longer applies. It looks like they will be able to make it.
But when the dregs of society come leaking out to the countryside from the ruins of nearby Philadelphia, things change, and the Pratts realize something - they have to do more. Unless they take food into the city, the city will come out to get it from them by force, trampling them and their way of life in the process.
You would think it would be easy to give away food in a fallen world, but in a city where only the strong survive - and they are used to taking what they want - things can get complicated, especially when Zee decides that the policies of slavery have to end for the warlords to get fed. Will Zee be able to feed an entire city, or will the warlords break him, too, just like they have everyone else who’s tried to stand up to them?
Unfortunately for the warlords, Zee has a secret weapon - he has a Jimmy.

Great series..
Good story! It was about how the Farmers became so powerful that some of the worst killers became afraid of Kendrick and his sons Zebadiah and Jimmy. They changed their little part of the world, after the nukes destroyed the United States. AND there's a LOT of killing so if you don't like lot of bloody battles you shouldn't read this.
There was only a hint of a blossoming romance and the F-bomb was used 6 times.
As for the narration: Mark Boyett was awesome!

As long as you ignore the trite “in the fallen world” and similar inserts, this whole series is ridiculously good. Like, really good. And I have never liked post-apocalyptic genre books before.

At last!
I was immediately curious when refrences to the farmers was made and wanted to learn more about their origins.
All iI have to say is Christopher Woods knows how to write a suspenseful, engaging tale . It's where I'll want to be
