Publisher's summary

While Laura Ingalls grows up in a little house on the Western prairie, Almanzo Wilder is living on a big farm in New York State. Here Almanzo and his brother and sisters help with the summer planting and fall harvest. In winter there is wood to be chopped and great slabs of ice to be cut from the river and stored. Time for fun comes when the jolly tin peddler visits or, best of all, when the fair comes to town.

This is Laura Ingalls Wilder's beloved story of how her husband, Almanzo, grew up as a farmer boy far from the little house where Laura lived.

7 year old boy's review

This is the best book ever. I like that it is set on a farm and it all the cool stuff they did. They get to do lots of grown up stuff but also have fyun. The ending made me sad that it ends! I really like Almanzo's dad. It feels good inside to hear about him.

UGH!....The Narrator!

The narrator's mispronunciation ruined this listening experience. She constantly mispronounces the main character's name, in addition to other words. You'd think if one was going to narrate Little House books, they'd at least know how to properly say Almanzo's name, as well as how to pronounce the commands used to drive livestock! GHEE is clarified butter - not the way to tell a calf to turn left! That command would be GEE, with a hard G sound! There are other examples of her mistakes, but you get the general idea. It was appalling.

Narrator almost ruins this

The story is about a boy. Narrator should be a man’s (Almanzo) voice to truly fit the book character. This narrator’s voice does not fit the story.

She says, Al-MAN-zo with so much emphasis on the A in manzo , it starts to sound like nails on a chalk board. I have commonly heard is pronounced (Al-mon-zo), with a gentler emphasis on the A in manzo . She sounds like She is trying to hard to sound like a man/boy (it is a story about a boy). She does not do the book justice. This book is a classic boys book (as we all know). She almost ruined it for me.

Best if read on paper.

wonderful way to spend a childhood.

Enjoy this book as an adult with your children by your side. There are some great scenes in this book. I especially like the story of the pig and the candy, I also liked the story about the Colt STARLIGHT. the part where the parents go away for a week and the kids are left at home to cook and clean is hilarious, almost like the kids getting into the cookie jar with all the sugar they used. The narrator is perfect and has a wonderful voice for this book and makes it sound like you are really there as Almanzo. Laura Ingalls Wilder hit a homerun with me with this book and I'm 58 so I guess I'm just a kid at heart.

Fun, wholesome, outstanding!

We listened to this story as a family on a road trip, and I feel like it enriched all of our lives! Our young girls enjoyed, our teenage boys enjoyed it, and their parents enjoyed it too :)

Horrible

Almanzo is a fat brat and the book is about him guzzling food and stuffing himselfWith pie and cookies and donuts and apples and more pie and mashed potatoes and gravy and and and and and more more pie and more potatoes more everything he’s a big fat brat and I do not appreciate the story. However The narrator was pretty good. But the rest was garbage I mean pure trash like like slimy and gooey trash so I do not recommend this book however the little house series was amazing like the rest of the Series was amazing I have never listen to it personally but I’ve been told that it is just amazing but this book was a horrible disappointment I do not recommend this book but I do recommend the rest of the little house series to everyone if they want to hear a good story about the life of a pioneer

childhood treasure

one of my favorite childhood books. Didn't care for the narrator's voice or pacing. Was she trying to sound like an enthusiastic little boy? Not sure but it wasn't written in first person.

Interesting diversion

Book two of the Little House series, Farmer Boy, was a interesting diversion to Laura Ingalls Wilder’s story as it was based in New York about Almanzo Wilder. This book took place in his youth. It had interesting stories as certain values were taught to Almanzo by his father. He learned the value of money as the fifty cents given to Almanzo was expressed as a day’s worth of work. He was taught not to spend his money foolishly on wants but to spend it in ways that increased in value such as on a baby pig that he could sale for four dollars as opposed to lemonade that would be gone in one day. He was taught the value of being an honest person and not lying as when he felt that raising his pig on milk was not fair when entering a best pig contest when asked how he got his pig so big. He considered not telling the truth but finally to the man his pig was weened on milk. His father laughed because he knew it all along. He learned the tickets to bargaining for better prices by asking more that he wanted and expecting the buyer to negotiate down the price. He learned that money does always get you everything that you want some times a willingness to take responsibility was price enough as his father gave him a colt to break in. Overall the book was entertaining and gave you a little bit more insight in a piece of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s life.
