Publisher's Summary

The British government is being blackmailed by criminals who got their hands on a quantity of plutonium left over from the Cold War. There is only one man who knows their identity and can prevent a disaster, but he is on the run for a murder he didn’t commit and has no intention of being found.

As the authorities attempt to track him down, the clock is ticking, and they are running out of time. They pin their hopes on the fact that a bunch of amateurs won’t have nuclear technology and the worst they will manage is a dirty bomb. After all, everyone knows they aren’t really that dangerous.

People run away from the explosion, and the radiation drifts harmlessly into the atmosphere. But suppose you could change that? What if the terrorists had found a way to keep the radiation near to the ground, encourage people to hang around breathing in death, and when you invite them to their own slaughter, they come willingly? They would be dangerous then...wouldn’t they?

Brilliant 5 star audio book

This is the first book in a new series to me, which I love as it means no annoying back story and having to catch up with what happened previously.

This is a very fast moving book, which never let up from the start to the end.

The book is a great thriller, with lots of intrigue and questions asked, all of which are answered by the end of the book.

THe narrator read the book brilliantly and kept me engaged throughout

Non stop from the beginning

As soon as this began it took off at full pace!
Plutonium is being used to blackmail the government & the guys doing this are a mixed bunch & none of them are appealing. To be honest neither are the police!
Nick though is an unassuming guy who is thrown into this head first. A likeable character and his new friend from MI5. I’m going to read or listen to more to find out where they go from here.
Narrator kept the pace going & voices differently per character, great job there.

Fast paced adventure with engaging characters.

This was not the normal genre I would chose but on the recommendation of a friend, I read and thoroughly enjoyed this book.
In my opinion, even though the story was well structured and very engaging, it was the characters that really held me. I thoroughly enjoyed the development of Nick as a ordinary man in extraordinary circumstances. I also enjoys the sub-story of the two school boys. Their behaviour was the perfect combination of trepidation and school boy naughtiness and pranks. As a parent of a boy that age myself, I felt it was a very realistic depiction.
I found the narration of the book added to my enjoyment in particular the animation of the speaker and the range of characters he managed to convey. As an avid listener of audiobooks I find a bad narrator can really ruin a book for me but this was perfect. Mr Bowles enunciated beautifully. Bad enunciation can be very distracting for me but with this book I was so engage, I forgot i was listening to an audiobook and was able to become immersed totally.
I am looking forward to the next instalment of this story. I feel quite invested in the main protagonist now and would like to follow his adventures, provided the narration continues to such a high standard.
I would highly recommend this book, it is an entertaining premise with good character development. Well written and well narrated.

Great start to a series!

I have to admit, at first I wasn’t taken with the narration. And I couldn’t really put my finger on why. But I did say ‘at first’ because by the time I was half-way through, all was fine, and by the end, I found myself hoping that it is Craig Bowles narrating the rest of the series.

And whilst this is clearly marked as book 1 in the Nick Sullivan thrillers, I was wondering how an on-the-run banker could become a main series character. And I was pleased to find that question resolved itself nicely at the end of the book.

I really enjoyed this book. The story is character-driven and moves along quite nicely, and despite some early deaths, it never feels hurried. I liked the idea of the protagonist being a wanted man, trying to avoid the police whilst trying to track down the real criminals. And with their crimes being far worse than Nick could ever imagine, and Nick’s own life becoming more and more in jeopardy, the stakes are high.

I’m looking forward to what Nick Sullivan gets up to in book 2!

loved this book so much .... never stops moving

This book is great. it moved with lots of pace and fury and the story was good and believable. this won't be the last book from this author. Really enjoyable story line. I must admit that the first few chapters I struggled with the narration - cant really explain it but I carried on with it and am so glad that I did as the book was brilliant and I cant wait for book #2

Excellent gripping story

The premis of this story is an unusual one, with twists and turns... There is a little romance, chemical warfare, kidnapping and lots of good guys too. The characters are all very different and most likeable. There is lots of action and the pace is fast yet enjoyable. I loved the plot and storyline as it was not your everyday story. They only slightly irritating element for me, which is why I have only given it 4 stars, was the narration. Initially I found it a bit robotic, but got used to the voice and came to enjoy listening, however some drastic work is needed on the accents, the German accent is definitely more Bombay than Berlin, and the cockney accent is rather Dick van Dyke.....
All in all a blast!!!!!!

Fast paced

Nick Sullivan is out sailing with his boss when they come across 3 men in a boat with engine troubles. Nick's boss boards to try to help and one of the men cuts his throat. Nick has to dive overboard to escape. That's where his troubles begin as the police don't believe his story and he goes on the run to try to clear his name.

I hadn't read anything else by Karla Forbes so didn't have any expectations and was pleasantly surprised to listen to a very well written, fast paced thriller. The story draws you in from the start and there are plenty of twists and turns. Nick is a very likeable, believable character, though has far more than his share of bad luck.

Craig Bowles narration was excellent and he coped very well with the different voices.

The book left me wanting.more Nick Sullivan action and I am disappointed to see that Audible UK doesn't have any of the other books in the series in its catalogue!

Thrilling fast paced story

I loved this audio. This poor guy narrowly escapes with his life after offering help to the crew of a disabled ship and then finds himself a wanted man for murder of his best friend whilst trying to find the men responsible and prove his innocent. I was hooked from the first word.
