In the cold void of the Belt, one man and his AI dogs stand against the stars—and an empire that wants to "harmonize" humanity out of existence. When unknown ships destroy a lone miner's rig and send a dying warning to Mike Stone, the quiet shepherd of drill-bots knows the solar system just changed forever. The Thrang have arrived—rigid, insectoid conquerors who impose perfect order on chaotic worlds. Earth falls fast. Mars follows. The Belt? It's next.
Mike never wanted to lead a rebellion. He just wanted to mine ore, keep his pack safe—Wiley's steady patience, Grease's reckless speed, Cato's quiet watchfulness—and listen to Lady Susquehanna's warm, river-valley voice. But when alien beams carve through human defenses and families fracture under occupation, loyalty demands more than survival.
From Kuiper shadows to Vesta's burning skies, Mike and his unlikely family fight with improvised weapons, unbreakable bonds, and sheer mule-headed grit. The Thrang call it chaos. Mike calls it home.
In a galaxy that demands submission, one shepherd refuses to kneel. Fall in love with the Dogs of Ore series. Borrow or read free with Kindle Unlimited today.

I loved the book.

What impressed me most was the world building. The universe he creates feels rich and believable, and the alien species are among the most original I’ve encountered in recent science fiction. Their culture, motivations, and worldview are developed with such depth that they become every bit as compelling as the human characters.
The military aspects of the story are equally impressive. As a retired Army colonel, a graduate of the United States Army War College, and now a faculty member there, Marcus Snow brings a level of authenticity to the concepts of combat, occupation, insurgency, and rebellion that few authors can match. Rather than relying on clichés, he presents conflict through the eyes of a true strategist, making every decision and campaign feel grounded and believable.
I also appreciated the ingenuity and resilience of the human characters. Their resourcefulness, combined with the book’s underlying theme of harmony, adds an unexpected depth that elevates the story beyond a typical military science fiction novel.
If you’re looking for an audiobook with compelling characters, exceptional world building, thoughtful strategy, and plenty of action, this is an easy recommendation. Whether you’re a dedicated sci-fi fan or simply interested in military strategy and the complexities of conflict, you’ll find something to enjoy here. I sincerely hope this is the first of many stories and series from Marcus Snow.
