Once Alex Verus was a diviner trying to live quietly under the radar. Now he's a member of the Light Council who's found success, friends...and love. But it's come with a price - the council is investigating him, and if they find out the truth, he'll lose everything.

Meanwhile, Alex's old master, Richard Drakh, is waging a war against the council, and he's preparing a move that will bring Alex and the life mage, Anne, under his control. Caught between Richard and the council, Alex's time is running out. To protect those he cares for, Alex will have to become something different. Something darker....

Definitely Dark

Well, yes. We were warned, I just didn't realise how far into darkness Benedict Jacka was going to go with this one. Parts I should have known, the hints were there from previous books, I just didn't pick up on the Drakh bit.

Definitely NOT a book to start with, there is too much back story for anyone to understand a lot of the book unless they've listened to (or read) the previous books. It's almost as if characters from every book made an appearance in this one (maybe they did, I lost count).

Beautifully narrated as usual by Gildart Jackson, although some of the voices changed from previous books. I think that's been commented on before regarding previous books.

In some ways this is a rough book to listen to, it takes away so much that Alex has worked for. I'm trying not to give anything away in this review so I won't list anything else. It does, however, leave the reader with a bit of a cliffhanger ending, of which I'm not fond - especially when we have to wait probably a year for the next book.

The writing is powerful, character development for Alex is taken several steps further and, to be honest, it's a bit of a rollercoaster as far as emotions go.

loved how the story continues

I love how the story continues, but it feels a bit rushed to get Alex to where he needs to be. it maybe smoother if you re-listen to the few previous books to get a more satisfying story pacing.

great book, and it brings the story to a reasonable conclusion, can't wait for the finale

Brilliant storyline

This one really steps it up for all the lead characters and is my favourite of the series so far, well worth reading the first ones though as they set the scene. Perfect for Jim Butcher fans too.

Closing in on the big finale

After the story became a bit repetitive in the last couple of books, it takes a turn and changes pace in the this volume. Finally there is some progress and we get a peak at some of Richard's big plans. Good Performance be Gildart Jackson, who I enjoy as a narrator. It feels as if he had ever so slightly changed his intonation on Arachne though. I'd really love for these books to be translated into a TV series. I struggle with all the different characteristics of Elsewhere and its probably easier to understand in a visual medium.

Very good

Well worth listening to and a great continuation of the series. Reader wasn’t great at times and lacked consistency with voices from previous books but not distracting.

great continuation of the story, well narrated

Gildart does a fantastic job, brinting the world of Mage Verus and his friends to life. the pacing is done well and this novel really feels like a game changer with how much happens in a short perior. the only drawback is it feels like a bridge - you now want to see the other side!

eagerly awaiting the next installment

So good

So good, I couldn’t stop listening and I thought the book was going in a certain direction so listened intently and with a love for the characters.

I wasn’t keen on two characters (trying not to spoil) new accents but it’s been a long stretch of books so maybe thats why they’ve changed over time. Jacka has become more slick with his writing style which definitely showed throughout the plot.

I really enjoyed this, defo don’t start at this book you'll miss too many backstories!
