History is comforting

Liked the variety of civilizations covered; was hoping to hear about the culture of the Great Zimbabwe but it was relatively short-lived so I understand why it didn't make the cut.

New fave book to tell people about

It's all in the title. Loved the book, great entertaining and informative listen. The podcast is great too!

Captivating

Really in depth storytelling I was captivated by the stories of long distant civilizations and really enjoyed the narration.

As good as the podcast!

I have been listening to this authors podcast for years. He does such great work and I loved listening to this. Whenever I am stuck at what to listen to I go back to this audiobook.

Highly recommended

This is a great book about the rise and fall of several civilizations. Because of my background, I particularly liked the chapters on civilizations in the Americans (Aztec, Mayan, Inca, and Easter Island). Illustrated by interesting facts and quotes from chroniclers and poems/songs, it gives a fact-based and balanced view. I like when authors narrate their own books, and while Mr Cooper's voice is not particularly stimulating, it does a good job. I really loved the end, when the author speculates on how the fall of our civilization would look like. I did not know this author has a podcast, and I am not motivated to listen to it.

would have liked more continuation to the modern day. Only focused on Ancient and secluded civilizations.

author really tells a grand story

if you have never listened to his YouTube or podcast then you will thoroughly enjoy his voice, tone, and inflection while he SHOWS you the immense undertaking he must go through to research and then write these stories.

He makes listening to essentially a lecture on historical peoples something that you wished was taught to you in high school and college. His insight taking the research he gains and then spinning that knowledge into a chronological story is very rare. you feel like you come away with the experience of living with these peoples or times.

Very well-researched with up to date information. Author is an excellent narrator as well. Highly recommended

Fascinating

The narration will not please everyone, but the content of the book is fascinating. The sweeping epic of human development gets an excellent update from the author. The details are rich. I enjoyed it the whole way through, and it added much to my understanding and perspective on the world after hundreds of previous books of nonfiction.
