Publisher's summary

His father killed by the British and his home burned, young Tatton Chantry left Ireland to make his fortune and regain the land that was rightfully his. Schooled along the way in the use of arms, Chantry arrives in London a wiser and far more dangerous man. He invests in trading ventures, but on a voyage to the New World his party is attacked by Indians and he is marooned in the untamed wilderness of the Carolina coast. It is in this darkest time, when everything seems lost, that Chantry encounters a remarkable opportunity....

Suddenly all his dreams are within reach: extraordinary wealth, his family land, and the heart of a Peruvian beauty. But first he must survive Indians, pirates, and a rogue swordsman who has vowed to see him dead.

Such an excellent epic!

I didn't recall the specifics from 40-plus years ago, but I remembered the emotions it evoked during my teenaged reading. Great to hear it anew from a 58-year-old's vantage point. Ageless tale. Could've been written in 2020. Louis L'amour was a wondrous wordsmith and philosopher. May his heaven be on horseback.

Terrible narrator.

The story was solid but the narrator ruined it for me. I could not finish the book.

L'amour at his best.

one of his best books and better characters. As always, he has earned his reputation.

Awesome audio book!!

I read this book years ago so hearing the audio was great. No one can write like Louis Lamour. The narrator was really good and brought the story to life. Enjoyed it so much!!

Broken story line

Deserted on an island, then back in London, then back to the island. Ok once you understand what’s happening.

Cunning and daring tale of Irish luck

a great story of how a varied mix of skills and talents can change circumstance. luck often born of adversity and just as often likeability. talent with a weapon, good fortune with whom to invest and recognizing how to bend an ear with written words, lay out the many paths and twists setting up one exciting event after another.
